Binghamton University is a public research university in Binghamton, New York with an undergraduate size of 14,307. It is a part of the State University of New York (SUNY) collegiate system. According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

Binghamton University receives an “A+” grade for the Amount of Foreign Funding Received. According to <a href="https://sites.ed.gov/foreigngifts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">College Foreign Gift Reporting</a>, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $17.00 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. Binghamton University receives an &#8220;F&#8221; grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students.  According to <a href="https://www.suny.edu/diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SUNY,</a> in February 2021, &#8220;SUNY announced the 25-Point Diversity, Equity, &amp; Inclusion Action Plan, mapping out a pathway to close racial equity gaps, eliminate academic barriers and re-commit to its mission.&#8221; Of the 25 action items, 12 are completed, five are almost completed, and eight are in progress. SUNY requires that diversity is incorporated in General Education requirements. Binghamton University requires students to complete courses in its &#8220;Diversity: Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice&#8221; category and in its &#8220;U.S. Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice&#8221; category.

According to her university biography, Dr. Candela’s research focuses on Chinese History, Society, and Migrations.
A leaked syllabus for Dr. Candela’s class—“Social Change-Introduction to Sociology”— announces that in class discussions, priority will be given to people of color and women.
The syllabus—first reported on by Campus Reform—<a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/559564087/SOC-100B-2022-Spring-Syallbus-2-Redacted#download&amp;from_embed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asks students who are “white, male, or someone who is privileged by racial or gender structures</a>” to yield their questions or comments to women and “non-white folks” under the section titled “Class Discussion Guidelines.”  Dr. Candela describes the practice as “progressive stacking,” which grants preferential treatment to individuals based on skin color, sexuality, gender, and race.
“We practice progressive stacking when calling on people to participate in class discussions. This means we try to give priority to non-white folks, to women, and to shy and quiet people who rarely raise their hands. It also means that if you are a white male, or someone privileged by the racial and gender structures of our society, to have your voice easily voiced and heard, we will often ask you to hold off on your questions or comments to give others priority and will come back to you a bit later or at another time.” 
<a href="https://dailycaller.com/2017/11/06/progressive-stacking-is-infiltrating-college-classrooms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Professors across the country have adopted this tactic</a>. Students considered marginalized by society are called on before white males. The tactic appears to have begun during Occupy Wall Street in 2011 before spreading to academia.

“Mao Zedong is famous for having once said, “No investigation, no right to speak.” While a bit harsh, it helps to convey the idea that speaking during class discussions should be based on having done your investigative work.” 
<a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Mao-Zedong" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mao</a>—who chaired the Chinese Communist Party from 1935 until his death in 1976—is considered one of the deadliest heads of state in history. <a href="https://www.heritage.org/asia/commentary/the-legacy-mao-zedong-mass-murder" target="_blank" rel="noopener">An estimated 65 million Chinese perished during his regime</a>. Mao’s farming collectivization—known as the “Great Leap Forward”—contributed to upwards of 40 million of these deaths during the largest man-made famine in history.
During China’s “Cultural Revolution”, Mao enlisted students—dubbed the “Red Guard&#8221;—<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/01/chinas-rebel-historians/617265/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to target teachers, intellectuals, workers, government officials, and civilians deemed insufficiently supportive of the Communist Party</a>. Millions were publicly shamed. An estimated 1.5 million people were killed before the purges ended in 1976.
The syllabus takes further care to note that masks are mandated during class. If any students arrive without a mask, Dr. Candela threatens to dismiss everyone in attendance and cancel the lecture entirely.
In a statement, a Binghamton University <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/binghamton-university-slaps-down-professors-progressive-stacking-section-of-syllabus-for-non-white-folks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spokesman told Fox News the syllabus violates the faculty staff handbook and the term “progressive stacking” has been removed</a>.

<a href="https://www.coursicle.com/binghamton/professors/Meisha+Lohmann/">Meisha Lohmann</a> is a lecturer in the English Department at Binghamton University.
In a piece for <a href="https://theconversation.com/wonka-movie-holds-remnants-of-novels-racist-past-217069">The Conversation</a>, Lohmann writes about the 2023 film “Wonka.” She addresses what she calls a racial agenda regarding the film’s character “Noodle” along with that of the original Willy Wonka story written by Roald Dahl. She writes:
“Unfortunately, the latest <a href="https://www.wonkamovie.com/">Wonka</a> movie also engages in the type of implicit racism that remains in the revised 1974 version of the novel. The most prominent Black character, a girl named Noodle, played by the talented <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7412362/">Calah Lane</a>, takes a back seat to Wonka in the major events of the film.”
Noodle, according to Lohmann, is a girl cast “in the position of an unfortunate Black girl who can only hope for a ride on Wonka’s velvet coattails.” Wonka’s role is seen as that of a “white savior.”
Lohmann also discusses the original Willy Wonka story in Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (part of which was re-written a few years after its publication in 1964). Regarding the original story, Lohmann writes of Wonka’s actions towards the Oompa-Loompas:
“Wonka describes how he ‘smuggled’ the Oompa-Loompas into the country in ‘large packing cases with holes in them,’ the image clearly recalls slave ships navigating the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/the-middle-passage.htm#:%7E:text=The%20Middle%20Passage%20itself%20lasted,15%25%20grew%20sick%20and%20died.">Middle Passage</a>.” 
Donald Sturrock’s “<a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=udN6caZEJesC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q=naacp&amp;f=false" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Storyteller: TheAuthorized Biography of Roald Dahl</a>” addresses the controversy behind Dahl’s original Oompah-Loompa character. Upon facing criticism of the African Oompa-Loompas from the NAACP, Dahl changed their appearance and nature. Dahl was dismayed with the disapproval of these characters in their original form. He felt the NAACP believed his book to be “a subtle anti-negro manual,” which he said was far from his intentions.
Returning to the more recent Willy Wonka film, Lohmann cited some dialogue, with her descriptions, between Wonka and Noodle: 
“I know things haven’t been easy for you.” ‘Wonka says in the movie.’ “They’re going to get better.”
“You promise?” ‘Noodle replies, hopefully, and he does promise, highlighting his role as her white savior. Another character in voice-over agrees:’ “You could change her life, Mr. Wonka. Change all their lives.”
Lohmann finished the piece by lamenting “Wonka’s” failure to move “away from the novel’s racist origins,” and impart “the power of imagination on a new generation.”  She cautions moviegoers from watching the film and to wait for a Wonka movie devoid of what she perceives as racism. 
“Unfortunately, moviegoers may find themselves having to hold their breath and make a wish, as Gene Wilder <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVi3-PrQ0pY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated in a song</a> from the 1971 movie, for a version that holds no remnants of its racist past.”
