One of the demands is titled &#8220;Employee Training&#8221; and reads: &#8220;This demand outlines the need for every employee at Emerson College to undergo racial bias training that utilizes resources on campus (Dr. Tuesda Roberts and the Social Justice Collaborative).&#8221;

Mandated Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Training for Staff

Emerson College receives an &#8220;A&#8221; grade for not having a Bias Reporting System or a Bias Response Team. Bias Reporting Systems and Response Teams are systems or teams of faculty, staff, and sometimes law enforcement.
According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

Emerson College receives an “A-” grade for the Amount of Foreign Funding Received. According to <a href="https://sites.ed.gov/foreigngifts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">College Foreign Gift Reporting</a>, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $230.89 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. The figure above only takes into account reported foreign funding.

<a href="https://www.emerson.edu/faculty-staff-directory/kimberly-mclarin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Kimberly McLarin</a> is a Professor of Creative Writing and the Director of Popular Fiction Writing and Publishing at <a href="https://www.emerson.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Emerson College</a> in Boston, Massachusetts. As of January 2022, she will additionally serve as <a href="https://berkeleybeacon.com/creative-writing-professor-appointed-interim-dean-of-graduate-and-professional-studies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Interim Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at the college</a>.
Dr. McLarin is known for her racially laden invectives directed against white people, delivered across a variety of platforms and mediums. In one article, Dr. McLarin bluntly states that white women and black women cannot be friends because of their skin color.
At the beginning of her piece, Dr. McLarin writes that <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/03/29/can-black-women-white-women-be-true-friends/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">she simply cannot trust white women:</a>

She further reveals that her closest friends have also cut off many white people from their immediate circle. Dr. McLarin echoes their sentiments, writing that white women are just, “too much trouble” to be around.
Dr. McLarin then lists what she describes are the real reasons why she isn’t friends with white women; their power and white privilege. She accuses all white women of holding and wielding racial privilege to their benefit, in particular with matters involving police officers. She describes these women as the “most ferocious” opponents of gender equality, as they “choose race over gender” on every occasion. Therefore, she contends that many white women do not wish to grapple with race and, as a result, their racial privilege.
Dr. McLarin then writes that she attributes her frustration in particular to the white women in her class. She singles out white, female students in particular for failing to comprehend systemic racism. She finishes the piece by stating that white women simply do not view black women as vulnerable, and therefore do not view black women as human.
In a separate article, Dr. McLarin goes even further; <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/03/fashion/03love.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">she states that she will not only refuse to be friends with white women, but will not date anyone that is white</a>. The piece was published in the New York Times in December of 2006, just after Dr. McLarin separated from her husband. She acknowledges the divorce was over race, admitting that her white husband’s inability to grapple with race was the deciding factor in ending their marriage.
The majority of the article explains Dr. McLarin experiences dating another colleague, who is also white. During one of their dates, Dr. McLarin found herself enraged over a conversation involving race. She writes that her hands began trembling when her date stated, “I don’t think everyone is racist.”
She would eventually break up with him, admitting that “it costs too much for me to date a white man.”

Dr. McLarin expresses her contempt for her NRA-certified instructor and her uneasiness in handling a gun throughout the piece, writing that her past experience with guns had been “wholly negative.” Listing off a variety of examples of what she would describe as racialized violence, Dr. McLarin characterizes the reason for her wanting to get a gun is due to the fact that “white violence towards black people is always calculated.” She further writes, “but some things are clear: Power begets violence. Violence reinforces power. White Americans damn well know this much.”
Dr. McLarin then identifies her urgency in getting a gun; If a racial war were to break out, she would use the gun against the “violent white mobs” and “take them as they come.”
“If a civil war breaks out, I say, if violent white mobs begin roaming the country as they have done in the past, I will not worry about precision shooting. I intend to sit on my porch with my legally acquired handgun and as much ammunition as I have and perhaps a bottle of Scotch and take them as they come. I say as much to my husband. My husband, understandably, is shocked. He’s not sure he believes me. I’m pretty sure he should.” 
She then alludes that her actions are necessary and justified, questioning whether she can live in a violent society without becoming and acting just as violent.

Her original comments were <a href="https://www.facebook.com/shaya.gregorypoku/posts/995249889614" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published as an address to white parents</a>, asking them to make the “struggle for racial justice” part of their daily lives.
Urging parents to embrace “racial differences,” Dr. Poku describes color-blindness as “absurd.”
“Acknowledge and celebrate differences in appearance, features, and cultural norms. Describe people referring to their racial backgrounds. Do not use euphemisms or code words.”  
“DO NOT teach kids that the world is fair or a meritocracy! Stop the propaganda!” She continues, “The U.S. (and the world) have long and violent histories of racial subjugation. The status quo – what is normative in U.S. society is racism, white supremacy, and anti-blackness. Kids need to be progressively introduced to the harm of this racial hierarchy.”
