According to <a href="https://reg.msu.edu/AcademicPrograms/Text.aspx?Section=112#s460">the university</a>, &#8220;All students, including those who are undocumented, are classified as in-state students for tuition purposes if they meet certain criteria set forth in the Regulations for Qualifying for In-State Tuition. The regulations include:

Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. The university was also <a href="https://www.aei.org/carpe-diem/michigan-state-university-gets-caught-illegally-segregating-affinity-groups-by-skin-color-then-conceals-it-and-then-backtracks/">caught</a> &#8220;illegally segregating &#8216;affinity groups&#8217; by skin color.&#8221; Lastly, the university <a href="https://gscc.msu.edu/programs/signature-programs.html">hosts</a> &#8220;Lavender Receptions&#8221; to honor &#8220;graduating LGBTQIA2S+ students at all levels of their education.&#8221;

Michigan State University receives a “C” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. According to <a href="https://msu.edu/together-we-will/faqs/">the university&#8217;s</a> FAQ page, &#8220;MSU no longer requires students, faculty and staff to be vaccinated and boosted.&#8221;
The university discusses the removal of its vaccine mandate: &#8220;As both the virus and our understanding of it continues to evolve, there is widespread protection due to the number of individuals vaccinated. New vaccine boosters and treatment options are widely available, and we know better how to protect the vulnerable.&#8221;
However, <a href="https://msu.edu/together-we-will/covid19-vaccine/">the university</a> does encourage vaccination. &#8220;COVID-19 vaccines, a safe and effective way to prevent serious illness and hospitalizations during the pandemic, no longer are being required by MSU, though they are strongly encouraged.&#8221;

Penn was recorded complaining in one of his creative writing classes about “dead white Republicans” who “raped his country.” As a student videotaped his rant, Penn antagonized students and asked, “You look like you’re frowning. Are you frowning?”.

Carla Pfeffer is an <a href="https://socialwork.msu.edu/directory/pfeffer-carla.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associate Professor of Social Work</a> and Director of the Consortium for Sexual and Gender Minority Health at Michigan State University.
Professor Pfeffer is outspoken about her pro-choice beliefs. She was quoted in an MSU Today article titled: <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2022/Roe-V-Wade-decision-MSU-experts-discuss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Roe v. Wade overturned: Michigan State University experts discuss.”</a> Pfeffer stated:
“Consistent governmental inaction in regard to protecting all children from poverty, gun violence, and police violence reveals the hypocrisy of legally restricting abortion. Rather than protecting children, banning abortion is about governmental power and control over marginalized bodies and crass political maneuvering to appease a conservative base.” 
She continued:
“In discussions about the overturn of Roe v. Wade, people who are lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and non-binary tend to be left out of the conversation.”
She finished her statement by claiming that members of the LGBTQ community “often face disproportionately higher rates of unintended and unwanted pregnancy” and that abortion access is “critical for ensuring physical and mental health.”

“Racism has serious and harmful health repercussions for the community. But, if you’re not looking at racism as a systemic problem, then it becomes a lot easier to ignore. Even when people are willing to talk about racism, there often isn’t a clear understanding of systemic racism. There is a reluctance to acknowledge how we all participate in racist policies and practices.” 
The project also formed a community action council to establish a strategic plan to end racist policies and practices in Genesee County. <a href="https://news.umich.edu/beyond-rhetoric-offers-road-map-for-responding-to-racism-as-a-public-health-crisis/#:~:text=The%20Beyond%20Rhetoric%20project%2C%20which,as%20a%20public%20health%20crisis." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Council recommendations</a> included hiring more health care professionals of color, reforming school discipline policies, and making community services accessible to people with disabilities and people with limited English proficiency.
Lapeyrouse said she believes <a href="https://news.umflint.edu/2023/02/08/um-flint-professor-students-working-with-beyond-rhetoric-project-to-fight-racism-in-genesee-county/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-racism work</a> is more important now than ever, and she makes sure to instill that in her students.
“I see this move as acknowledgment by people making decisions that impact the health and wellbeing of everyone in our community that racism exists. We need policies in place that ensure equity. We can’t ignore what is right here in front of us.”

“When students know the work they’re doing is for actual people, their effort and what they are able to accomplish is so much greater than what I see in my non-service learning courses. <a href="https://broad.msu.edu/profile/arifinis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Iskandar Arifin</a> is a Finance Professor at Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business. His list of courses taught includes “Introduction to Investment,” “Theory of Investments,” and “Managerial Finance.”
As of March 1, 2024, Arifin was <a href="https://statenews.com/article/2024/03/msu-professor-charged-with-possession-of-child-pornography-placed-on-administrative-leave" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> to be on administrative leave pending an investigation into child pornography charges dating back to 2022.
The State News wrote, “[Arifin] has been charged with six counts of ‘child pornography-related allegations’ … [He] was charged with three counts of possessing ‘child sexually abusive material’ and three related counts of using a computer device to commit a crime.”
According to the <a href="https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/2024/03/01/msu-professor-charged-child-pornography-iskandar-arifin/72808364007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lansing State Journal</a>, “[Arifin] was placed on administrative leave Friday afternoon … He is prohibited from reporting to work, being on campus or having contact with students … He was arraigned on Friday and his bond was set at $75,000.”
The source also said Arifin was “investigated by MPS [Michigan State Police] Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Court records indicate the alleged crimes took place in May 2022.”
Arifin could spend up to 25 years in prison if convicted. He is due for a probable cause conference on March 12 and a preliminary exam on March 19, according to Lansing State Journal.
