According to <a href="https://sites.ed.gov/foreigngifts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">College Foreign Gift Reporting</a>, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $1,240 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Springfield, Missouri violent crime rate was 1316.03 per 100,000 people in 2018, much higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

Professor Ott published an op-ed in The New York Times titled, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20221121133530/https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/20/opinion/donald-trump-twitter-return.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“I Studied Trump’s Twitter Use for Six Years. Prepare for the Worst.”</a> In his article, Ott claims, “&#8230;nothing Mr. Musk has done … is nearly as concerning as his decision to suddenly reinstate former President Donald Trump’s account.”
Ott says he has been studying Trump’s Twitter activity since before he became president, and adds:
“&#8230;I believe that his return would mean the heightened spread of both misinformation and disinformation, the proliferation of degrading and dehumanizing discourse, the further mainstreaming of hate speech and the erosion of democratic norms and institutions.” 
He also believes Trump’s return to Twitter could lead to political violence because he has “demonstrated a consistent willingness to invoke racially and sexually charged rhetoric that contains an implicit call to violence.”
