According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

&#8220;According to CDC director, Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, available data right now show that all three of the COVID-19 vaccines approved or authorized in the United States continue to be highly effective in reducing risk o severe disease, hospitalization, and death, even against the original strain and 2 strains of the widely circulating Omicron variants of COVID-19.&#8221;
Masks are no longer required in classrooms or in laboratory settings. However, masks are required in the NKU Health, Counseling, and Student Wellness facilities.

According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Highland Heights, Kentucky violent crime rate was 28.12 per 100,000 people in 2018, lower than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

<a href="https://onlinedegrees.nku.edu/faculty_brandelyn-tosolt.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Brandelyn Tosolt</a> is an Associate Professor at Northern Kentucky University and co-founder of the <a href="https://abolitionistteachingnetwork.org/">Abolitionist Teaching Network</a> (ATN). 
ATN encourages teachers to <a href="https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/8d4b8aa7-b12e-4df8-9836-081a29841523/downloads/ATN%20Guide%20to%20Racial%20and%20Restorative%20Justice%20in.pdf?ver=1639147237108" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promote the “liberation” of people of color</a> and “embody the spirit” of the Black Lives Matter movement. <a href="https://www.professorwatchlist.org/professor/bettinalove" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Betina Love</a>, the group’s president, has accused white educators of the “<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20210106043843/https://www.edweek.org/leadership/opinion-how-schools-are-spirit-murdering-black-and-brown-students/2019/05" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spirit murder</a>” of black children. 
In an interview with the University of Georgia’s student publication, “<a href="https://www.redandblack.com/uganews/uga-professor-founds-racial-equality-education-project/article_5b019170-cd51-11ea-bd50-a3bd8e0c6368.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Red &amp; Black</a>,” Dr. Tosolt states that she wants to help teachers become anti-racist and “unlearn their whiteness.” She advocates for educators to recognize “the whiteness embedded in their institutions and teach them to use their privilege to get rid of their privilege.”  
Dr. Tosolt hopes to eradicate “anti-blackness” by including more black authors in the curriculum and removing police officers from schools in order to “interrupt racism:”  
“The goal is to interrupt racism through multiple measures such as choosing Black authors, selecting resources that are authentic and multifaceted, and advocating for the election of Black people to school boards.”
These ideas are core themes in one of Dr. Tosolt’s courses titled “Racism and Sexism in Education.” The videos listed for the class include an introduction in which Dr. Tosolt expresses <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rEYIXCDOzU&amp;list=PL2njuXn6coFyHNgNK3pmn41SoxIhwX8_n&amp;ab_channel=BrandelynTosolt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">her desire to create “anti-racist” educators</a>. Another video explains why <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4LMEe0Lt9E&amp;list=PL2njuXn6coFyHNgNK3pmn41SoxIhwX8_n&amp;index=2&amp;ab_channel=BrandelynTosolt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“color blindness” is a myth</a>.   
In a separate article—titled “<a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09518398.2019.1706198?journalCode=tqse20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dear White Teacher: This Black History Month, Take a Knee</a>,” Dr. Tosolt accuses white teachers of appropriating Black History Month. She writes the celebration of the holiday only serves to reinforce white supremacy.
“&#8230;White teachers as authority figures who regulate the presence of Blackness, and without drawing attention to the White supremacist cultural norms that are the foundation for U.S. society, students can walk away from Black History Month with a reinforced belief in White supremacy.”
Dr. Tosolt advocates for teachers to learn critical race theory in order to fully disrupt an education system “built on a system of whiteness, entrenched in a white supremacy culture, and defended by white fragility.”
The Professor Watchlist reached out to Dr. Tosolt for comment but has not received a response by the time of publication.
