In May 2023, during an event featuring James Lindsay, roughly 150 students <a href="https://dailynorthwestern.com/2023/05/03/campus/students-protest-conspiracy-theorist-james-lindsay-at-nucr-and-yaf-event/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">protested</a> outside and accused Lindsay of promoting &#8220;anti-LGBTQ&#8221; rhetoric. In September 2022, Students <a href="https://dailynorthwestern.com/2022/09/23/campus/anti-abortion-activists-unaffiliated-with-northwestern-protest-at-the-arch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">protested</a> a demonstration by Created Equal, an anti-abortion youth organization. During an <a href="https://dailynorthwestern.com/2021/10/27/campus/andrew-yang-talks-new-party-universal-basic-income-at-nu-college-democrats-event-60-students-protest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">event</a> featuring Andrew Yang, Students for Justice in Palestine staged a walk-out over their opposition to Yang&#8217;s pro-Israel stances. They further accused him of supporting genocide against the Palestinian people.

Butz is an open Holocaust denier and has authored a number of books and articles denying that millions of Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps.
In his book, The Hoax of the 20th-Century, Butz <a href="https://archive.org/details/HoaxOfTheTwentiethCentury/page/n231/mode/2up?q=23">claims</a> that there is no proof of any intent by the Nazis to exterminate Europe’s Jews. “I congratulate him on becoming the first head of state to speak out clearly on [the Holocaust] and regret only that it was not a Western head of state”
Despite his beliefs, Northwestern University <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2006/02/bienen.html">continues</a> to employ Butz. University President Henry S. Bienen stated that while his opinions are “reprehensible,” no action can be taken as Butz’s views are personal and expressed outside of the classroom.

<a href="https://www.sociology.northwestern.edu/people/faculty/core/laura-beth-nielsen.html">Dr. Laura Beth Nielsen</a> is a Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. She wrote in an op-ed that there are good arguments for restricting free speech rights. She said that racist hate speech has been linked to higher rates of smoking and obesity, for example. Supporting her argument for restricting speech, she pointed out that recently the Supreme Court ruled that a music group (&#8220;The Slants&#8221;, a band made up of Asian-Americans) was allowed to use a derogatory name as their band name, although she did not point out the band was using the name to mock people who use the name in a derogatory fashion.

PROTESTS; ANTI-LAW ENFORCEMENT
During anti-Israel protests on college campuses across the United States, Thrasher <a href="https://lithub.com/you-are-being-lied-to-about-gaza-solidarity-camps-by-university-presidents-mainstream-media-and-politicians/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published an opinion editorial</a> with Lit Hub in which he claimed the public was being lied to about the violence reported by mainstream media.

Dr. Sumanas Jordan is an <a href="https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/faculty-profiles/az/profile.html?xid=41686#publications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery and the founding director of Northwestern Medicine’s Gender Pathways Program.</a> She has been performing gender-affirming surgeries at Northwestern Medicine since 2018.
The <a href="https://www.nm.org/conditions-and-care-areas/gender-pathways-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gender Pathways Program</a> is “committed to providing gender-affirming care to transgender and gender nonbinary patients.” A 2020 <a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2020/06/gender-pathways-program-makes-trans-health-care-a-priority/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northwestern Now</a> article says the program “offers feminizing and masculinizing facial, top and bottom surgeries, as well as connections for hormone therapy, primary care, preventative health screenings and laser hair removal.”
Dr. Jordan was the lead author of a study released in September 2022, titled <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/article-abstract/2796426?resultClick=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Top Surgery and Chest Dysphoria Among Transmasculine and Nonbinary Adolescents and Young Adults.”</a> The study sought to answer the question: “Does gender-affirming top surgery improve chest dysphoria, gender congruence, and body image in transmasculine and nonbinary adolescents and young adults?”
The participants in the study ranged in age from 13 to 24, with an average age of 18. In a <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-surgery-transgender-teens-northwestern-study-20220926-2yrapzgitzatla6cnzv2xqhzvm-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago Tribune</a> article about the study, Dr. Jordan states:
“Our findings are that top surgery (to remove the breasts) benefits these teenagers and young adults.”
She adds that she does not believe all teens should be required to delay these life-altering surgeries until age 18:
“If you had any other medical conditions where you said, ‘I’m not going to treat your diabetes or high blood pressure until you’re 18’ or ‘I’m going to hold off on treating you for years,’ it’s not ethical to withhold care for that long.” 
In a <a href="https://news.nm.org/study-top-surgery-significantly-improves-quality-of-life-in-transmasculine-and-nonbinary-teens-and-young-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Northwestern Medicine press release</a>, Dr. Jordan states:
“Patients who choose gender-affirming top surgery feel better about their bodies, and it enhances their quality of life. Our hope is that this study will now be used as a resource for teens, young adults and for families who want to learn more about surgical transition options.”

In a<a href="https://breakthroughsforphysicians.nm.org/providing-gender-affirming-care-to-transgender-and-gender-diverse-patients.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> video for Northwestern Medicine,</a> Dr. Bowen says her role is to “provide urologic support for the transgender surgeries.” She states that the surgeries she performs include “transfeminine surgeries such as gender-affirming vaginoplasty and vulvoplasty as well as gender-affirming phalloplasty and prosthetic implant device.”
In 2022, Bowen participated in a discussion on how to invite “transgender” patients into medical communities. In a <a href="https://www.urologytimes.com/view/lugpa-speaker-on-welcoming-gender-diverse-patients-in-the-urology-practice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three-minute recap</a>, Bowen declared:
“My talk was really focused on tips and tricks for welcoming any gender-diverse patient into your practice, [and] how to make them have a great healthcare experience—both in the general clinic sense and also for any urologic complaint they come in with—and really outside of the bottom surgery aspect that we talk about so frequently.”
“Bottom surgery” refers to a biological male having his penis reconstructed into a “vagina.”

The<a href="https://www.nm.org/conditions-and-care-areas/gender-pathways-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Gender Pathways Program</a> is a multidisciplinary program “committed to providing gender-affirming care to transgender and nonbinary patients.” A 2020<a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2020/06/gender-pathways-program-makes-trans-health-care-a-priority/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Northwestern Now</a> article says the program “offers feminizing and masculinizing facial, top and bottom surgeries, as well as connections for hormone therapy, primary care, preventative health screenings and laser hair removal.”

In a<a href="https://breakthroughsforphysicians.nm.org/providing-gender-affirming-care-to-transgender-and-gender-diverse-patients.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> video for Northwestern Medicine,</a> Dr. Bowen says her role is to “provide urologic support for the transgender surgeries.” She states that the surgeries she performs include “transfeminine surgeries such as gender-affirming vaginoplasty and vulvoplasty as well as gender-affirming phalloplasty and prosthetic implant device.”

In 2022, Bowen participated in a discussion on how to invite “transgender” patients into medical communities. In a <a href="https://www.urologytimes.com/view/lugpa-speaker-on-welcoming-gender-diverse-patients-in-the-urology-practice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three-minute recap</a>, Bowen declared:
“My talk was really focused on tips and tricks for welcoming any gender-diverse patient into your practice, [and] how to make them have a great healthcare experience—both in the general clinic sense and also for any urologic complaint they come in with—and really outside of the bottom surgery aspect that we talk about so frequently.”
“Bottom surgery” refers to a biological male having his penis reconstructed into a “vagina.”

Campus Reform reports that Chen was in charge of a study that was criticized for having no control group. The study—”<a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2206297" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Psychosocial Functioning in Transgender Youth after 2 Years of Hormones</a>”—analyzed 315 participants, between the ages of 12 and 20, over the course of two years.
Participants received “gender-affirming hormones,” which are hormones to make their male or female bodies resemble bodies of the opposite sex. Chen claims, “During the study period, appearance congruence, positive affect, and life satisfaction increased, and depression and anxiety symptoms decreased.”
However, <a href="https://donoharmmedicine.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Do No Harm</a>—an organization of doctors, nurses, and health care professionals—questioned the study’s lack of a control group. In a report provided to <a href="https://www.dailysignal.com/2023/02/01/exclusive-medical-group-pokes-holes-fatally-flawed-study-claiming-prove-kids-benefit-transgender-hormones/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Signal</a>, Do No Harm calls the study “fatally flawed and borderline unscientific.” Stanley Goldfarb, board chair at Do No Harm, said:
“The absence of any control group raises the possibility that ongoing psychological counseling and therapy may explain the slight improvement in some parameters of the study.” 
Do No Harm’s report also notes:
“The researchers and four clinics featured in this study have a well-publicized history of radical activism and advocacy for the medical transition of children … Given this obvious bias, there is a high likelihood that study participants were steered towards responses that align with the activism promoted by these clinics.”

<a href="https://afam.northwestern.edu/people/faculty/barnor-hesse.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barnor Hesse</a> is an Associate Professor of African American Studies, Political Studies, and Sociology at Northwestern University. According to his university profile, his research interests include, but are not limited to: black political thought, blackness and affect, and race and governmentality.
Hesse teaches several undergraduate courses, including “Unsettling Whiteness” and “Racism in Western Modernity.” The course description for “<a href="https://class-descriptions.northwestern.edu/4820/WCAS/AF_AM_ST/39740" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsettling Whiteness</a>” says the course “will examine whiteness in four main ways: as the racialization of white populations; as the formation of white supremacy; as the cultural institution of the White Gaze; and as the regime of White Democracy.”
“<a href="https://afam.northwestern.edu/courses/2021-2022/class-schedules/spring-2022-class-schedule.html#courses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Racism in Western Modernity</a>” says the course “is not overly concerned with empirical case studies or attitudinal assessments; it promotes a conceptual approach rather than a descriptive one.” Instead:
“It will be concerned with explaining the apparent racial discrepancies and racial injustices of western modernity (e.g. democracies combined with racism, liberalism combined with imperialism) and how those racial discrepancies and racial injustices inform, shape and define western societies like the United States.” 
Hesse created a resource called “<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/nyc-public-school-asks-parents-to-reflect-on-their-whiteness" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The 8 White Identities</a>.” East Side Community School in Manhattan came under fire after they gave “The 8 White Identities” to every parent “as part of a series of materials meant for reflection” and as “food for thought.”
Hesse’s curriculum claims,

<a href="https://afam.northwestern.edu/people/faculty/barnor-hesse.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barnor Hesse</a> is an Associate Professor of African American Studies, Political Studies, and Sociology at Northwestern University. According to his university profile, his research interests include, but are not limited to: black political thought, blackness and affect, and race and governmentality.

Hesse teaches several undergraduate courses, including “Unsettling Whiteness” and “Racism in Western Modernity.” The course description for “<a href="https://class-descriptions.northwestern.edu/4820/WCAS/AF_AM_ST/39740" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsettling Whiteness</a>” says the course “will examine whiteness in four main ways: as the racialization of white populations; as the formation of white supremacy; as the cultural institution of the White Gaze; and as the regime of White Democracy.”

“<a href="https://afam.northwestern.edu/courses/2021-2022/class-schedules/spring-2022-class-schedule.html#courses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Racism in Western Modernity</a>” says the course “is not overly concerned with empirical case studies or attitudinal assessments; it promotes a conceptual approach rather than a descriptive one.” Instead:
“It will be concerned with explaining the apparent racial discrepancies and racial injustices of western modernity (e.g. democracies combined with racism, liberalism combined with imperialism) and how those racial discrepancies and racial injustices inform, shape and define western societies like the United States.” 
Hesse created a resource called “<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/nyc-public-school-asks-parents-to-reflect-on-their-whiteness" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The 8 White Identities</a>.” East Side Community School in Manhattan came under fire after they gave “The 8 White Identities” to every parent “as part of a series of materials meant for reflection” and as “food for thought.”

Hesse’s curriculum claims,

Watson wrote a June 2023 opinion piece for the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230624112626/https://www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/outlook/article/feminist-family-values-roe-wade-18168285.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Houston Chronicle</a> titled, “One year post-roe, it’s time for feminist ‘family values.’” She asserts, “The Supreme Court was stunningly wrong to reverse Roe v. Wade, and historians will judge it harshly.” However, she goes on to say that she does not wish for the return of Roe v. Wade, rather:
“I want something better: reproductive justice legislation and state constitutional amendments that protect the right to not have children, the right to have children, the right to parent the children we have and help doing all of the above when we need it.” 
Throughout the article, Watson calls for a “fresh set of family values.” She believes family values have long been the “code for a decrepit view that women were born to be slaves to biology, babies and men.” Instead, “Valuing women’s brains and hearts more than their uteruses means respecting when they don’t want to have a baby &#8211; now, again or ever &#8211; and also respecting when they do.”
Watson also believes the term “mothering” no longer solely applies to women, saying:
“&#8230;’Mothering’ can be understood as gender-neutral: Some women don’t give their children the nurturing they need, and many men and nonbinary people do. ‘Mothering’ is shorthand for the investment in children women have historically made, but now is open to anyone.” 
In July 2023, Watson co-authored an article for <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2023/07/28/doctors-providing-abortion-referral-information-states/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">STAT News</a> titled, “Doctors in states that ban abortion can still refer patients elsewhere. Why are so few doing that?” Watson and her co-authors claim “all-options pregnancy counseling has been the governing standard of care for decades” and doctors have an “ethical imperative” to provide abortion information to their patients.
“Doctors’ silence violates their central ethical obligations to respect patients’ autonomy, advance justice, and promote beneficence.” 
The authors encourage doctors to break the law if necessary, quoting the American Medical Association’s Code of Ethics’ preamble that instructs, “In exceptional circumstances of unjust laws, ethical responsibilities should supersede legal duties.” They allege:
“When doctors prioritize their own interests in avoiding potential legal risks above the health of their patients, they negate their core ethical and professional obligations to their patients.” 
They conclude by calling on professional organizations within the healthcare field to “adopt guidelines requiring the sharing of abortion information. They should specify, at a minimum, that clinicians share the names of trusted websites where patients can find accurate information about abortion options, and counsel their patients on data privacy.”

<a href="https://www.qatar.northwestern.edu/directory/profiles/al-hroub-khaled.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Khaled AL-Hroub</a> is a professor in residence at Northwestern University’s overseas campus in Qatar. According to his university profile, his focus is “Middle Eastern studies and politics with particular interest on Islam and politics, Arab-Israeli conflict and Arab media studies.”
On October 16, 2023, Hroub was a guest on the Boston NPR (WBUR) program “On Point.” During the interview, Hroub “expressed doubt that women and children had been killed by Hamas” during the terror group’s attack on Israel. WBUR <a href="https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2023/10/16/hamas-a-history-lesson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pulled the program from national distribution</a> and released a statement that read, in part:
“This episode of On Point did not meet our editorial standards. It is paramount to acknowledge when our work falls short of our standards. … The program was live and as it progressed, Professor Hroub expressed doubt that women and children had been killed by Hamas in its October 7 attack on Israel.”
“On Point Host Meghna Chakrabarti countered with statements of fact to correct the record. But that does not negate the impact of hearing Professor Hroub’s statements. On Point strives to contribute thoughtfully to the public discourse, and in an environment where misinformation is both rampant and dangerous, we felt compelled to pull this hour of our programming from national distribution after its initial broadcast.” 
During the program, Hroub claimed he had not seen any “credible” reporting that Hamas terrorists had killed civilians in their beds. He also stated, “We have read of course, you know, the beheading of 40 babies and raping women and all of that, and of course, when you hear these things, I myself, I was shocked and then it turned out to be kind of fabricated and all of that.”
Hroub believes Israeli media feeds “misinformation” to the public and defended his comments to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/npr-affiliate-pulls-show-after-guest-doubted-hamas-killed-women-children-during-terror-attacks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News Digital</a>:
“I said that the source of all the stories about Hamas beheading 40 babies and raping women were mostly Israeli. These stories proved to be all lies, baseless and fabricated. By the same token, all the figures about the dead on the Israeli side come from Israeli sources, including the breakdown of numbers between soldiers and civilians. There is no third and/or neutral party to verify these news and figures, and names of the killed. I’m not defending Hamas here, I’m asking for verified information.” 
Northwestern University has tried to distance itself from Hroub’s comments and released the following <a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2023/10/university-statement-on-professor-khaled-al-hroubs-interview-with-wbur/?fj=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>:
“While Northwestern firmly supports academic freedom and freedom of expression, we condemn any attempt to minimize or misrepresent the horrific killing of Israeli civilians by Hamas on Oct. 7. Khaled AL-Hroub’s opinions are his own. Individual faculty members do not represent the views or beliefs of the University.”

<a href="https://www.qatar.northwestern.edu/directory/profiles/al-hroub-khaled.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Khaled AL-Hroub</a> is a professor in residence at Northwestern University’s overseas campus in Qatar. According to his university profile, his focus is “Middle Eastern studies and politics with particular interest on Islam and politics, Arab-Israeli conflict and Arab media studies.”

On October 16, 2023, Hroub was a guest on the Boston NPR (WBUR) program “On Point.” During the interview, Hroub “expressed doubt that women and children had been killed by Hamas” during the terror group’s attack on Israel. WBUR <a href="https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2023/10/16/hamas-a-history-lesson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pulled the program from national distribution</a> and released a statement that read, in part:
“This episode of On Point did not meet our editorial standards. It is paramount to acknowledge when our work falls short of our standards. … The program was live and as it progressed, Professor Hroub expressed doubt that women and children had been killed by Hamas in its October 7 attack on Israel.”
“On Point Host Meghna Chakrabarti countered with statements of fact to correct the record. But that does not negate the impact of hearing Professor Hroub’s statements. On Point strives to contribute thoughtfully to the public discourse, and in an environment where misinformation is both rampant and dangerous, we felt compelled to pull this hour of our programming from national distribution after its initial broadcast.”

<a href="https://communication.northwestern.edu/faculty/moya-bailey.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Moya Bailey</a> is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University. Bailey’s work “focuses on marginalized groups’ use of digital media to promote social justice, and she is interested in how race, gender, and sexuality are represented in media and medicine.”
Bailey authored a book titled “<a href="https://www.transformisogynoir.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Misogynoir Transformed</a>,” which highlights “black women’s digital resistance to anti-black misogyny on YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, and other platforms.” The term “misogynoir” was coined by Bailey and added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2023. She defines the term as “the anti-black, racist misogyny that black women—and people perceived as black women—experience.”
As an <a href="https://magazine.northwestern.edu/voices/moya-bailey-misogynoir-racism-misogyny-merriam-webster-digital-apothecary/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">example of “misogynoir,”</a> Bailey cites the maternal morbidity rates for black women. She attributes the higher negative health outcomes to “misogynoir,” saying, “There’s no other explanation except for the particular combination of anti-black racism and misogyny that’s impacting their birthing experiences.”
Bailey is the director and founder of the <a href="https://www.digitalapothecary.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Digital Apothecary lab</a>, “a hybrid digital and physical lab dedicated to combining ancient and new technologies in an effort to produce processes and projects that aid those most marginalized in society.”
One of the <a href="https://www.digitalapothecary.org/projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lab’s projects</a> “Ethical Internet?” is described by Bailey:
“While there can be no ethical engagement with the internet under capitalism, I do think there is a less harmful path for our web wandering to take, one that my students and I have begun to explore in a course of the same name.” 
Bailey wrote an article on “ethical internet” for <a href="https://just-tech.ssrc.org/articles/an-ethical-internet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Just Tech</a> in which she refers to the internet as a “<a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/northwestern-lab-envisions-ethical-internet-without-capitalism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">military-derived technology</a>.” She recounts her family getting the internet for the first time when she was in fifth grade.
“Little did I know that this access was afforded to me because of my Western, class, and educational privilege. I did not know about the child labor of girls who looked like me and who would also have been in the fifth grade, mining for minerals that made my internet connection possible in what we now recognize as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.” 
Bailey claims the internet “relies on oppression to exist” and says she seeks answers to the following questions:
