According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

Providence College receives a “C-” grade for the Ratio of Right-Leaning Clubs to Left-Leaning Clubs. Out of a list of 20 clubs (10 from each side), <a href="https://student-activities.providence.edu/clubs-organizations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the university</a> has one right-leaning club compared to three left-leaning clubs. The one right-leaning club is Scalia Society. The three left-leaning clubs are PC Democratic Socialists of America, Women Empowered, and S.H.E.P.A.R.D. Providence College receives a &#8220;C&#8221; grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. The university requires students to fulfill course credits within course categories as part of its Core Curriculum. Students are required to take courses in Development of Western Civilization, Philosophy (including Ethics), Theology, Fine Arts, Natural Science, Quantitative Reasoning, and Social Science. Additionally, students are required to gain four Proficiencies in Civic Engagement, Diversity, Intensive Writing, and Oral Communication. <a class="waffle-rich-text-link" href="https://academics.providence.edu/core-curriculum/diversity-proficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The university</a> describes its Diversity Proficiency:
&#8220;The pursuit of truth that animates the academic mission of Providence College cannot be rightly undertaken by individuals isolated from community. Education is not merely an acquisitive process, but a formation of mind and heart directed toward the sharing the fruits of one&#8217;s contemplations with others. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Providence, Rhode Island violent crime rate was 454.57 per 100,000 people in 2018, higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people.
