Mandated Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Training for Staff

According to <a href="https://registrar.sdsu.edu/students/additional_resources_students/residency_information">the university</a>, &#8220;California law provides for specific exemptions to nonresident tuition. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. According to the <a href="https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/campus-divestment-resolutions">Jewish Virtual Library</a>, since the start of the 2013-14 school year, the university’s student body has introduced two pieces of legislation that would require the university to divest from any Israeli company and from companies that do business with Israel. Both pieces of legislation failed.
Introducing these types of legislation often puts a target on Jewish and pro-Israel students and communities, fostering an environment vulnerable to antisemitism.

San Diego State University receives an “F” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. <a href="https://sacd.sdsu.edu/student-health-services/immunizations">The university</a> describes its rules on vaccinations on its Immunization Requirements page: &#8220;The California State University system announced on Dec. 22, 2021 that all students, faculty and staff in the system will be required to have a COVID-19 primary vaccine series as well as a booster on file to access campus facilities and programs.&#8221;
<a href="https://sacd.sdsu.edu/student-health-services/covid-19/general-prevention">The university</a> describes its rules on masking on its Student Health Services General Prevention page: &#8220;As of Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, SDSU&#8217;s facial covering policy has been removed. There is no longer a requirement to wear facial coverings in instructional settings.&#8221; Additionally, &#8220;Individuals may still voluntarily mask either when in non-required indoor settings or outdoors if they wish to do so.&#8221;

<a href="https://cias.sdsu.edu/faculty" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ghassan Zakaria</a> is a Lecturer of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages at San Diego State University (SDSU).
According to <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/arabic-professor-distributes-map-without-israel-then-pencils-103206302.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Caller</a>, in 2013, during an Arabic 101 class, Zakaria “distributed a map that omitted Israel and labeled the land mass where Israel is located as ‘Palestinian Territories.’”
After being criticized for the anti-semitic map, Zakaria, according to The Daily Caller, “redistributed the exact same map after sloppily writing ‘Israel’ and generally indicating where the country is.”
In light of criticism from pro-Israel students, “Zakaria has expressed regret to the class,” The Daily Caller reports. However, “he has not issued any apology to anyone outside the class.”
<a href="http://thedailyaztec.com/40678/news/middle-east-map-stirs-controversy-on-campus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Aztec</a> also reported that, according to Zakaria, the map “was never meant to be seen as political or geographical; instead it was meant to display Arabic-speaking countries—about 15 percent of Israel’s population speaks Arabic.”
In response to students who were critical of the map, an SDSU spokesman stated the following:
“While SDSU encourages scholarly debate and discussion of varying opinions, presenting inaccurate information to students in not acceptable. This inaccurate portrayal will not reoccur.”

Jonathan Graubart

Dr. <a href="https://politicalscience.sdsu.edu/people/faculty/graubart_j.html">Jonathan Graubart</a> is a Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University (SDSU) and Director of the International Security and Conflict Resolution Program. According to his university biography, Dr. Graubart specializes in international relations, international law, Israel-Palestine, the UN, normative theory, and “resistance politics.”
In a July 2017 article, The College Fix reported that Dr. Graubart <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/professor-annoyed-groundswell-good-wishes-john-mccain-calls-war-criminal/">condemned Senator McCain as a “war criminal</a>” and someone who “has championed horrifying actions” in a now-deleted Facebook post on his personal account. <a href="https://www.johnmccain.com/">John McCain</a> was a United States Senator from Arizona who <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/john-mccain-dead-at-81">served as a Navy pilot and was a prisoner of war</a> during the Vietnam War. He died in August of 2018 after a battle with brain cancer.
In the now-deleted Facebook post, Dr. Graubart stated that <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/professor-annoyed-groundswell-good-wishes-john-mccain-calls-war-criminal/">he found himself “annoyed at the groundswell of good wishes for John McCain after his diagnosis of glioblastoma” (brain cancer).</a>.” His comment was posted <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/lawmakers-send-wishes-john-mccain-brain-tumor-announcement/story?id=48736469">just after John McCain announced his cancer diagnosis</a>.

ABC 10 News San Diego reported in July 2018 that an unnamed SDSU spokesman released a statement <a href="https://www.10news.com/news/san-diego-state-professor-makes-controversial-facebook-post">referring to Dr. Graubart’s post about McCain as “private speech”</a> that cannot be regulated. The spokesman also states that it does not “endorse” his views, nor does it have a social media policy for faculty members.
“SDSU does not have a social media policy for faculty and staff. As a public institution, we do not and cannot regulate the private speech of students, faculty or staff. However, that should not imply the university&#8217;s endorsement of any particular viewpoint”

Dr. <a href="https://politicalscience.sdsu.edu/people/faculty/graubart_j.html">Jonathan Graubart</a> is a Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University (SDSU) and Director of the International Security and Conflict Resolution Program. According to his university biography, Dr. Graubart specializes in international relations, international law, Israel-Palestine, the UN, normative theory, and “resistance politics.”

In a July 2017 article, The College Fix reported that Dr. Graubart <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/professor-annoyed-groundswell-good-wishes-john-mccain-calls-war-criminal/">condemned Senator McCain as a “war criminal</a>” and someone who “has championed horrifying actions” in a now-deleted Facebook post on his personal account. <a href="https://www.johnmccain.com/">John McCain</a> was a United States Senator from Arizona who <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/john-mccain-dead-at-81">served as a Navy pilot and was a prisoner of war</a> during the Vietnam War. He died in August of 2018 after a battle with brain cancer.

In the now-deleted Facebook post, Dr. Graubart stated that <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/professor-annoyed-groundswell-good-wishes-john-mccain-calls-war-criminal/">he found himself “annoyed at the groundswell of good wishes for John McCain after his diagnosis of glioblastoma” (brain cancer).</a>.” His comment was posted <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/lawmakers-send-wishes-john-mccain-brain-tumor-announcement/story?id=48736469">just after John McCain announced his cancer diagnosis</a>.

ABC 10 News San Diego reported in July 2018 that an unnamed SDSU spokesman released a statement <a href="https://www.10news.com/news/san-diego-state-professor-makes-controversial-facebook-post">referring to Dr. Graubart’s post about McCain as “private speech”</a> that cannot be regulated. The spokesman also states that it does not “endorse” his views, nor does it have a social media policy for faculty members.

“SDSU does not have a social media policy for faculty and staff. As a public institution, we do not and cannot regulate the private speech of students, faculty or staff. However, that should not imply the university's endorsement of any particular viewpoint”

<a href="https://education.sdsu.edu/directory/lashae-collins">Professor LaShae Collins, M.A</a>., is a professor in the Department of Africana Studies at San Diego State University. <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Lashae_Collins">According to Ballotpedia</a>, she is also District Director for a California state representative.  
<a href="https://newsone.com/4425479/san-diego-state-fake-slave-persona/">Newsone reports</a> that in October of 2022, Collins has “come under fire” for having her students complete an assignment that requires them to “create a slave persona.” An anonymous student claims that Collins wanted them to write diary entries using “broken English” in order to make their persona “historically accurate.” The same student also said that Collins wanted her students to “wear tattered clothing to illustrate the slave experience.” 
However, the Africana Studies Department Chair, <a href="https://thedailyaztec.com/111463/news/sdsu-africana-studies-story/">Adisa Alkebulan, told The Daily Aztec</a> that “there was never a requirement (for students) to dress as slaves or speak in ‘broken English’ as has been falsely reported in some news outlets.” The assignment description, which was posted on Instagram by student Amari Jackson, seems to corroborate the Department Chair’s statement, as broken English and tattered clothing are mentioned nowhere on it (see image below):

Another student said that Collins told her class that past students of the course came to class dressed as slaves for the assignment, which seemed to the student imply that they could get a better grade if they did so. Another anonymous student sent The Daily Aztec a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CjllD9ZvH1s/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading">PDF file</a> containing actual slave narratives which was provided to the students as a resource for the assignment. The narratives are full of broken English, which made the student think that Collins was recommending her students to use such language in the assignment.

Many said that Collins’ ability to teach and manage her classes is very poor. One student said: “​​What a NIGHTMARE! She is horrible! She couldn&#8217;t teach a dog to bark!”
