Sonoma State University receives a “C” grade for having a Bias Reporting System but not a Bias Response Team. Bias Reporting Systems and Response Teams are systems or teams of faculty, staff, and sometimes law enforcement.
According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

Out of a list of 20 clubs (10 from each side), the <a href="https://getinvolved.sonoma.edu/recognized-student-organizations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> has one right-leaning club compared to three left-leaning clubs. Turning Point USA is the one right-leaning club. BIPOC Space for Graduate Students, Queer Student Alliance at Sonoma State University, and Vagina Monologues are the three left-leaning clubs.

Denied Turning Point USA Chapter

Sonoma State University receives a “D” grade for In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants. Under Assembly Bill 540, some California non-residents are <a href="https://registrar.sonoma.edu/enrollment-policies/residency-reclassification/residency-requirements-faq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eligible</a> to pay in-state tuition.
&#8220;To qualify for in-state tuition fees under AB-540 or AB-2000, a student must meet the eligibility requirements for this program. Applicants must submit an AB-540 Affidavit (California Nonresident Tuition Exemption Request form) along with the most current official high school transcript to the Office of Admission.&#8221;

In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

Sonoma State University receives an “F” grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. The university <a href="https://catalog.sonoma.edu/content.php?catoid=9&amp;navoid=1071" target="_blank" rel="noopener">requires</a> all students to complete one course in Ethnic Studies. <a href="https://catalog.sonoma.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=9&amp;poid=3959" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Course</a> options include, but are not limited to:

<li>&#8220;Ethnic Groups in America&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;How Racism Works: America in Black and White&#8221;</li>

&#8220;Critical Race Studies is an important part of the educational environment in the State of California and is a key requirement to gaining an understanding of American multicultural perspectives.&#8221;

The university has five segregated <a href="https://diversity.sonoma.edu/cultural-graduation-celebrations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">convocations</a> (Asian American, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern Graduation, Black Graduation, Rainbow Graduation, Raza Graduation, and Native American and Indigenous Graduation) and two segregated living-learning <a href="https://housing.sonoma.edu/housing-options/living-learning-community" target="_blank" rel="noopener">communities</a> (Unity House and V.I.B.E.S.).
The university has no segregated classes.

According to the <a href="https://risk.sonoma.edu/covid-compliance-and-monitoring-office/covid-19-safety-protocols-ssu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university&#8217;s</a> COVID-19 Safety Protocols, &#8220;Effective April 2023, students are not required to be vaccinated for COVID-19. SSU strongly recommends students be vaccinated against COVID.&#8221;
Face masks are not required; however, &#8220;face masks are strongly recommended in all indoor settings at SSU.&#8221;

According to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Center (<a href="https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/use-the-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IPEDS</a>), as of 2020, 4.93% of the current undergraduate student population graduate with a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) degree. Across the United States, students who graduate with STEM degrees tend to earn more on average than their other student counterparts.

Sonoma State University receives a “C+” grade for Crime Rates in University City or Town. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Rohnert Park, California violent crime rate was 514.73 per 100,000 people in 2018, higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

Sonoma State University receives an “A” grade for Required Western Civilization Courses for Students. The <a href="https://catalog.sonoma.edu/content.php?catoid=9&amp;navoid=1071" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university</a> requires students to complete six credits of an American Institutions Requirement. The requirement covers three areas: &#8220;American History, the Constitution, and State and Local Government.&#8221;

<a href="https://politicalscience.sonoma.edu/faculty-staff/barry-preisler">Barry Preisler</a> is a Lecturer in the Political Science Department at Sonoma State University.  According to his university biography, Preisler has taught at Sonoma for over 15 years and his area of expertise is the Middle East. Preisler’s courses include International Political Economy, Modern Political Ideologies, Ideas and Institutions, and American Political Institutions. 
As revealed by a confidential source who recorded the lecture in full, Preisler accused conservatives of being “under the grasp of fascism” in Preisler’s introductory class, Modern Political Ideologies.

Preisler asserted that prominent leftist academics and authors would be mandatory reading in the course, such as Naomi Klein’s, Shock Doctrine &#8211; Disaster Capitalism, Chris Hedges’, American Fascists, and selections from Noam Chomsky.
The recorded lecture continued with Preisler disparaging his students who identified as libertarians.
