Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. According to the <a href="https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/campus-divestment-resolutions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jewish Virtual Library</a>, since the start of the 2013-14 school year, the university’s student body has passed one piece of legislation that would require the university to divest from any Israeli company and from companies that do business with Israel.
Passing this type of legislation often puts a target on Jewish and pro-Israel students and communities, fostering an environment vulnerable to antisemitism.

According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Chicago, Illinois violent crime rate was 1006.09 per 100,000 people in 2018, much higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

<a href="https://history.uchicago.edu/directory/bruce-cumings">Dr. Bruce Cumings</a> is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Chicago. Dr. Cumings placed most of the blame of North Korea’s problems on the United States, while also whitewashing problems in Korea.  For example, Cumings denies the existence of a massive famine in North Korea in the 1990s. Cumings blames the United States for North Korea’s problems, not Communism.

Of his group, he said, &#8220;We are a guerrilla organization. We are communist women and men &#8230; deeply affected by the historic events of our time in the struggle against U.S. imperialism.&#8221;

Dr. Landon was featured in a September 2022 BuzzFeed News article titled<a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katiecamero/is-the-pandemic-really-over" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> “No, The Pandemic Isn’t Really Over. Here’s Why.”</a> The article was in response to President Biden’s September 18 interview with 60 Minutes where he said: “The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it. But the pandemic is over.” Landon stated:
“The problem with Biden’s message is that it doubles down on this idea that we don’t really need to worry about COVID anymore … That messaging discourages people from keeping their vigilance up; it discourages people from putting on a mask in a high-risk situation; and it discourages people from getting those really essential boosters.”
 She continued:
“I really don’t think that people are quite as fatigued by the pandemic as they are of change. And while there’s still going to be some change to come, I think we have to do what we can to soothe and ameliorate the changes by avoiding saying things like the pandemic is over, which just creates whiplash.”

<a href="https://globalstudies.uchicago.edu/people/rebecca-journey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rebecca Journey</a> is a Teaching Fellow in the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. Journey teaches a course in the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies program titled “The Problem of Whiteness.”
The <a href="http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/comparativeraceethnicstudies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">course description</a> states “whiteness has long functioned as an “unmarked” racial category” and has “resurfaced as a conspicuous problem within liberal political discourse.” The seminar will examine “the problem of whiteness through an anthropological lens, drawing from classic and contemporary works of critical race theory.”
Daniel Schmidt, a sophomore student at the University of Chicago, <a href="https://www.yaf.org/news/uchicago-professor-seeks-discipline-action-against-student-who-exposed-her-racist-course/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared details about the course</a> in a <a href="https://twitter.com/RealDSchmidt/status/1587557829476777984" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter thread</a> that went viral.

After the post, Journey claims she received death threats and was the victim of online harassment. According to the <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/education/2022/11/19/23467967/whiteness-course-triggers-online-harassment-death-threats-university-chicago-instructor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago Sun-Times</a>, Journey defended the course saying, “The class is emphatically not about ‘the problem with white people.’ The class approaches whiteness as a problem in the philosophical sense of an open question …[with] whiteness as an object of critical inquiry.”
Professor Journey believes that Schmidt “deliberately misrepresented” her course “to stoke white grievance on social media:”
“I want to stress that these attacks are the direct consequence of this student’s targeted cyberbullying campaign. This was a malicious attack not just on me as a teacher but on anti-racist pedagogy writ large.” 
The University of Chicago issued a statement supporting Journey and the “freedom of instructors to teach any course that has been developed through our faculty-led curricular process.” However, Journey is calling for disciplinary action against Schmidt, saying the university should issue a public condemnation of the student’s actions.
The course is scheduled to begin in Spring 2023.

Bustion is teaching an autumn 2023 course through the Religious Studies Department titled, “<a href="http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/religiousstudies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Queering God</a>.”

We will analyze the ways that contemporary artists, activists, and scholars are using theology to reimagine gender and experiment with new relational forms. Our readings will include a variety of genres: memoir, letters, scriptural interpretation, and a novel.”

Auden.” Her paper was titled “<a href="https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/96141/obustion_1.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Queering the City of God</a>” and her “thesis relied on the work of Leo Bersani, an essayist who published a collection titled ‘Is the Rectum a Grave?’”
“Auden, according to the thesis, wrote a ‘prayer [that] gives gay sex a place in Christian worship. In her thesis, she ‘examines key moments in Auden’s conceptualization of a calling the aligns the charism of same-sex eros with anti-imperialist prophetic critique—from the prayerful question of ‘In Sickness and in Health’ to the playful answer of ‘The Garrison.’” 
The College Fix argues:
“The problem with the course is not just its fundamentally flawed assertion that God could be ‘queer,’ but that it is given an air of respectability by the University of Chicago.”

After Hamas terrorists attacked Israel in October 2023, Abdelhadi <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=24238" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed a statement</a> titled, “Writers in Solidarity with Palestine.” The letter begins, “We are writers who unequivocally stand with Palestine and its fight for liberation against the illegal occupation of ‘Israel’ and the violent settler colonial apartheid state.”
Some of the letter’s claims include: 
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“The west is actively backing the ongoing settler colonial project that endorses either a slow or fast genocide, but is genocide either way.”</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“Any form of Palestinian resistance is in no way equivalent to the daily violence of ‘Israeli’ settlers, the IOF (‘Israeli’ Occupying Forces), and the entire ‘Israeli’ state apparatus. Palestinian resistance exists because settler colonial occupation exists.” </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“The resistance is an ongoing response to a long history of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.” </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“Politicians at all levels of government internationally, primarily those in the west, are deliberately weaponizing islamophobic and orientalist language in order to manufacture consent for genocide in Palestine, heighten surveillance and policing domestically, and suppress any manner of showing solidarity with Palestine.” </li>
</ul>
The writers end with several “calls to action” for the signatories and their institutions, including: 
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“To stand in firm, vocal, and unwavering solidarity with Palestinian resistance against their occupation until liberation, by amplifying Palestinian voices in a time of mass disinformation and silencing; and by openly discussing the occupation in your workplace, home, on social media, in your work.” </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“To boycott all other literary institutions who profess Zionist affiliations.” </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">“To engage with the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, a Palestinian-led movement to end international support for ‘Israel’s’ oppression of Palestinians and all institutions complicit in ‘Israeli’ apartheid and settler colonialism.” </li>
</ul>
