The University at Buffalo is a public university and a part of the State University of New York system. The university enrolls over 32,000 students across 13 colleges, making it the largest public institution in the state of New York.
The campus is located a short distance from downtown and Lake Erie. The university is also the only in the SUNY system with an active Division I football program.
The university was <a href="https://www.buffalo.edu/news/key-issues/Millard-Fillmore.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">founded by President Millard Fillmore</a>, who also served as the chancellor from 1846-1874. His name was <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2020/08/05/u-of-buffalo-will-remove-president-millard-fillmores-deeply-hurtful-name-from-building/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">removed from the academic center</a> on campus after the administration announced its commitment to fighting &#8220;systemic&#8221; racism. The University President alleged that Fillmore&#8217;s complicity with the slave trade and support of the Fugitive Slave Act was the reason behind the decision.

Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.”

The University at Buffalo receives a &#8220;D&#8221; grade for In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants. New York <a href="https://www.higheredimmigrationportal.org/state/new-york/">state law</a> allows undocumented immigrants to access in-state tuition depending on certain criteria:
&#8220;New York <a href="https://nyassembly.gov/leg/?default_fld=&amp;leg_video=&amp;bn=A09612&amp;term=2001&amp;Text=Y" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Assembly Bill (A.B.) 9612</a>, signed into law on June 25, 2002, provides eligible undocumented students, including DACA recipients, with access to in-state tuition.&#8221;

Segregated Dormitories, Graduations, and Classes

The University at Buffalo receives a &#8220;F&#8221; grade for Protests and Cancelling Speakers.
Black Lives Matter <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/video-black-lives-matter-activists-disrupt-allen-west-speech-at-university-of-buffalo/">protestors disrupted</a> a visit by former Congressman Allen West in April 2022. After his speech ended, the Young Americans for Freedom Chapter President was chased by protestors across campus. She was forced to hide in a bathroom and be escorted off campus by police.
During a lecture by Michael Knowles in March 2023, <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/michael-knowles-feminism-talk-draws-large-protest-disruptors-removed-by-security/">hecklers interrupted him, yelling, “Trans Lives Matter!</a>” Hundreds more protested outside and at least one person was arrested.

During a 2023 protest against Riley Gaines, at least one student was arrested after <a href="https://www.tpusa.com/live/one-arrested-two-charged-at-tpusa-event-with-riley-gaines-at-the-university-at-buffalo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">assaulting a journalist</a>. Leftists had previously <a href="https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=21973" target="_blank" rel="noopener">torn down flyers</a> promoting the event.

Protests and Canceling Speakers

The University at Buffalo receives a &#8220;C&#8221; grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. On September 9, 2022, the state of New York <a href="https://www.suny.edu/sunypp/documents.cfm?doc_id=900" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mandated</a> that all SUNY students, faculty, and staff receive a COVID-19 vaccination. However, now <a href="https://www.buffalo.edu/coronavirus/health-and-safety/health-safety-guidelines.complete-guidelines.html#capacitylimits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">masking</a> and <a href="https://www.buffalo.edu/coronavirus/faqs.host.html/content/shared/faqs/uc/health-questions-and-concerns/vaccinations/vaccinations-14.detail.html">vaccinations</a> are only recommended by the university:

Mask and Vaccine Mandates

The University at Buffalo receives a “B-” grade for the Percent of Students Graduating with STEM Degrees. The University at Buffalo receives a “D-” grade for Crime Rates in University City or Town. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Buffalo, New York violent crime rate was 1042.53 per 100,000 people in 2018, much higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

Crime Rates in University City or Town

The University at Buffalo receives a “C” grade for Required Western Civilization Courses for Students. The university offers <a href="https://catalogs.buffalo.edu/search_advanced.php?cur_cat_oid=1&amp;search_database=Search&amp;search_db=Search&amp;cpage=5&amp;ecpage=1&amp;ppage=1&amp;spage=1&amp;tpage=1&amp;location=33&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">optional history courses</a> such as “United States History I,” &#8220;United States History II,” and “US History Since WWII.”
