<a href="https://udayton.edu/directory/artssciences/religiousstudies/brownsmith-esther.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Esther Brownsmith</a> is an Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Dayton. According to her faculty profile, Brownsmith’s scholarly work includes presentations such as “Non-Binary Performances in Esther: How Stories Create Gender” and “Transing Biblical Characters: Trans Lenses on Textual Interpretation.”
Brownsmith believes the Bible portrays gender as a “colorful spectrum” and supports the idea of transitioning genders. In an opinion piece for the <a href="https://www.daytondailynews.com/ideas-voices/voices-as-an-ohioan-and-a-christian-i-want-all-to-have-right-to-flourish-in-their-own-gender-identity/Z7CD3IBZCBABPDJBPW24PTVDCI/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dayton Daily News</a>, Brownsmith discussed how the Bible describes Joseph as wearing an “amazing technicolor dreamcoat” that she claims was similar to the kind young princesses used to wear. Brownsmith writes:
“This is just one of the ways that the Bible indicates that the ‘shapely and beautiful’ Joseph (Genesis 39:6) crossed gender boundaries, and he was not the only one: Deborah led an army, Mordecai breast-fed his cousin Esther, and Daniel was probably a eunuch.” 
Brownsmith continues, arguing that God is also <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/bible-portrays-gender-as-a-colorful-spectrum-theology-professor-says/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">portrayed as feminine</a>:
“Even God is sometimes described with feminine language, as a midwife or nursing mother. Yes, the Bible was written in a patriarchal time, but it recognizes that people reimagined and reshaped their gender identities back then—just like they do today.” 
Brownsmith believes “scripture and trans rights are not at odds” as God “calls for us to support society’s most vulnerable members.” She argues there is “abundant medical evidence that gender-affirming care saves lives and improves quality of life, and we should be enabling access to it for everyone who needs it.”
“Most Americans agree that religion should not dictate public policy, but these proposed rules are rooted in ingrained religious biases about gender roles. Those biases are unethical and unbiblical. Our trans neighbors are radiant gifts of God, just like Joseph and Deborah, and they are terrified by our government trying to legislate them out of existence.” 
Brownsmith is leading a lecture series at a local church during Lent called “<a href="https://daytonchristepiscopal.com/formation/?fbclid=IwAR1V-eh3-vtMHQO_sIcojrVEy3qpgZGhkZElpFhuz4Y00TowqwWr8NlUBGg#lentenseries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scripture’s Spectrum: Queer, Trans, and Non-Binary Bible Readings</a>.” The series will “move beyond the ‘clobber texts’ to seek out biblical stories of people who range across the spectrum of gender and sexuality.”
