In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

The University of Hawai&#8217;i at Manoa receives a &#8220;C&#8221; grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. Students are required to take six credits in the &#8220;Global and Multicultural Perspectives&#8221; category. The university describes the category as such:
&#8220;Global and Multicultural Perspectives (FG) courses provide thematic treatments of global processes and cross-cultural interactions from a variety of perspectives. Students will trace human development from prehistory to modern times through examination of narratives and artifacts from diverse cultures. At least one component of each of these courses will involve the Indigenous cultures of Hawai&#8217;i, the Pacific, and Asia.&#8221;
&#8220;History of Gender, Sex, and Sexuality in Global Perspectives to 1500 CE&#8221; and &#8220;History of Gender, Sex and Sexuality in Global Perspective, 1500 CE to the Present&#8221; are examples of courses in the above-mentioned category. However, these courses (and similar courses) can be bypassed in favor of unbiased course options.

The University of Hawai&#8217;i at Manoa receives “ a “B+” grade for Crime Rates in University City or Town. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Honolulu, Hawai&#8217;i violent crime rate was 249.59 per 100,000 people in 2018, higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

<a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/biology/people/marguerite-butler">Dr. Marguerite Butler</a> is a Professor of Zoology at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. Butler is currently being sued by a student for assault and battery. She allegedly attacked the student for not transporting bugs and flammable liquids. According to the student, he was trying to respect federal and state laws regarding the transportation and removal of these specific fluids and native bugs.

<a href="https://math.hawaii.edu/wordpress/people/paharron/">Dr. Piper Harron</a> is a Temporary Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Hawaii. Harron wrote an article about how white, male professors should resign or take a demotion in order to improve diversity. Harron wrote, &#8220;If you are a white cis man (meaning you identify as male and you were assigned male at birth) you almost certainly should resign from your position of power. That’s right, please quit. Too difficult? Well, as a first step, at least get off your hiring committee, your curriculum committee, and make sure you’re replaced by a woman of color or trans person.&#8221; She also wrote, &#8220;What can universities do? Well, that’s easier. Stop hiring white cis men (except as needed to get/retain people who are not white cis men) until the problem goes away. If you think this is a bad or un-serious idea, your sexism/racism/transphobia is showing.&#8221;

According to <a href="https://campusreform.org/article?id=20487" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Campus Reform</a>, Akuna will be teaching a “queer dance course” at UH Mānoa. This course will be the first of its kind to be offered by any American college. 
<a href="https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2022/10/11/manoa-queer-dance-course/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Hawai’i News</a> (UHN) writes that, in the course, Akuna “presents students with choreography and dance techniques that have graced Hawaiʻi’s entertainment scene through the decades, dating back to revered onstage revues in the 1960s at The Glades, a popular downtown Honolulu bar that featured female impersonation.”
UHN says that “queer dance” “can be traced back to the 1980s, [and] was born out of gay and lesbian dance clubs and ballroom culture and has been widely popularized on stage by pop artists such as Lady Gaga and Madonna.”
According to UHN, “Queer dance also features performing art forms such as impersonation, lip-synching and pantomime. The UH Mānoa course incorporates techniques and choreography created by Asian and Pacific Islander māhū (identity with male and female characteristics) here in Hawaiʻi.”
Akuna is also a drag queen who goes by the stage name of “Cocoa Chandelier” (see image below). According to his university profile, as a drag queen, Akuna “travels continuously as an advocate and spokesperson for HIV/AIDS, and is a long standing member with the United Territories of Pacific Islanders in Alliance that serves the Native Pacific Island and MVPFAFF+ community across the Hawaiian islands and the Pacific.”
