The University of Illinois-Chicago is a public institution located within Chicago&#8217;s city limits. The University of Illinois-Chicago receives an &#8220;F&#8221; grade for having a Bias Response Team. According to the <a href="https://dos.uic.edu/diversity-education/bias-reporting-prevention/">university</a>, the bias response team is &#8220;composed of staff from the three responsible units from the tool. Members of the Bias Response Team review and respond to all reports received through the Bias Reporting Tool.&#8221;
According to <a href="https://speechfirst.org/bias-reporting-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpeechFirst</a>, students are “encouraged to report ‘bias incidents’ to these boards (or teams) in the name of inclusion and tolerance, but it’s often unclear what the school considers ‘bias’ in the first place. Overly broad or vague definitions of bias put all kinds of speech at risk of being reported – even unpopular speech which is protected by the First Amendment.&#8221;

Bias Reporting System or Bias Response Team 

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a &#8220;B&#8221; grade for the Ratio of Right-Leaning Clubs to Left-Leaning Clubs. Out of a list of 20 clubs (10 from each side), <a href="https://uic.campusgroups.com/club_signup" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the university</a> has three right-leaning clubs compared to four left-leaning clubs. Young Americans for Liberty, Turning Point USA, and Young Americans for Freedom are the right-leaning clubs. Students for a Democratic Society, Students for Justice in Palestine, Pride in Pharmacy Association, and Planned Parenthood of Illinois are the left-leaning clubs.

Denied Turning Point USA Chapter

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a &#8220;D&#8221; grade for In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants. After the passage of the &#8220;<a href="https://dream.uic.edu/scholarships/legislation-101/who-qualifies-for-in-state-tuition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Acevedo Bill</a>&#8221; in Illinois, certain illegal aliens are eligible to receive in-state tuition at state schools.
&#8220;The Acevedo Bill is the informal name for Illinois General Assembly Public Act 093-07 and 110 ILCS 305/7e-5, which is the law that allows for in-state tuition for certain students who are not U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, or do not possess a green card, visa, or other legal documentation, provided specific criteria are met.&#8221;

In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants 

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a “B-” grade for the Amount of Foreign Funding Received. According to <a href="https://sites.ed.gov/foreigngifts/">College Foreign Gift Reporting</a>, the total amount of foreign funding the university has received is $1,473.11 per current undergraduate student. Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. The figure above only takes into account reported foreign funding.

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a &#8220;C&#8221; grade for Required Equity, Diversity, or Inclusion Courses for Students. The university <a href="https://catalog.uic.edu/ucat/degree-programs/general-education/#text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">requires</a> that students complete a certain amount of credits among six broader categories that are a part of the &#8220;General Education Core.&#8221; Biased or left-leaning courses are able to be by-passed, but the large amount of these courses makes this difficult. Some of the courses offered include, &#8220;Introduction to Black Studies,&#8221; &#8220;Racism: Global Perspectives,&#8221; &#8220;Disability, Race, Class, and Gender,&#8221; &#8220;Sexuality in America,&#8221; and, &#8220;Social Inequalities.&#8221;

Segregated Dormitories, Graduations, and Classes

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a &#8220;D-&#8221; for Protests and Canceling Speakers over the past year. Chapter members of Young Americans for Freedom had their &#8220;No More Che&#8221; tabling event <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/conservative-students-anti-marxism-display-shut-down-at-university-of-illinois-chicago/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shut down</a> by administrators, who warned them of disciplinary action if they did not move the display off public property.
During an event featuring Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens, <a href="https://humanevents.com/2023/03/10/violent-protestors-assault-man-try-to-stop-charlie-kirk-candace-owens-from-speaking-at-tpusa-live-free-tour-event-in-chicago?utm_campaign=64483" target="_blank" rel="noopener">members of ANTIFA protested outside</a>, yelling, “No Turning Point! No racist KKK USA!” A passerby not affiliated with the event was assaulted as he tried to film the group.

Protests and Canceling Speakers 

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a “C” grade for Boycotting, Divesting, and Sanctioning Israel (BDS). According to the <a href="https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/campus-divestment-resolutions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jewish Virtual Library</a>, since the start of the 2013-14 school year, the university’s student body has introduced one piece of legislation that would require the university to divest from any Israeli company and from companies that do business with Israel.
Although that piece of legislation failed, introducing this type of legislation often puts a target on Jewish and pro-Israel students and communities, fostering an environment vulnerable to antisemitism.

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a “D” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates.  Students are not required, but strongly encouraged by the university to be vaccinated against COVID-19. <a href="https://today.uic.edu/spring-semester-covid-19-guidance/#:~:text=Masks%20continue%20to%20be%20required,choice%20based%20on%20personal%20risk." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Masks are still required</a> in all indoor settings and while using university transportation:
“Masks continue to be required in classrooms, lecture centers, research labs, libraries, and learning/success centers, health care settings “including the Counseling Center), and on UIC shuttles and buses. Masking is highly encouraged in other settings, including at events, but it is a choice based on personal risk.&#8221;

The Univerity of Illinois-Chicago receives a “C” grade for the Percent of Students Graduating with STEM Degrees. According to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Center (<a href="https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/use-the-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IPEDS</a>), as of 2020, 7.49% of the current undergraduate student population graduate with a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) degree. Across the United States, students who graduate with STEM degrees tend to earn more on average than their other student counterparts.

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a “D-” grade for Crime Rates in University City or Town. According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Chicago, Illinois violent crime rate was 1006.09 per 100,000 people in 2018, much higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

The University of Illinois-Chicago receives a “C” grade for Required Western Civilization Courses for Students.
According to the <a href="https://catalog.uic.edu/ucat/degree-programs/general-education/#text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">university&#8217;s website</a>, students are required to take &#8220;a minimum of 24 semester hours of credit with at least one course in each of the six categories of General Education.&#8221;

We are communist women and men &#8230; deeply affected by the historic events of our time in the struggle against U.S. imperialism.&#8221;

She focuses on American gun politics, immigration policy, race and ethnic politics, public opinion, and political psychology.
Professor Filindra has been outspoken about her beliefs that gun ownership and racism are related.
She co-authored a study titled <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11109-015-9326-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Racial Resentment and Whites’ Gun Policy Preferences in Contemporary America.”</a> The study states that “the language of individual freedom used by the gun rights movement utilizes the same racially meaningful tropes as the rhetoric of the white resistance to black civil rights that developed after WWII and into the 1970s.” Filindra claims the study’s results show “racial resentment is a statistically significant and substantively important predictor of white opposition to gun control.”
She co-authored another study titled <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/soin.12388" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Racial Resentment or Sexism? White Americans’ Outgroup Attitudes as Predictors of Gun Ownership and NRA Membership.”</a> This study sought to link racial and gender ideologies to gun ownership among white Americans. She states: “We find strong evidence that racial resentment is associated with gun ownership, rationales for owning firearms, and NRA membership, but the results for sexiam are generally not consistent with expectations.”
Professor Filindra led a research group that conducted an online survey to compare views on American identity, guns, and political violence between white and black participants. Filindra commented on the group’s findings in a <a href="https://today.uic.edu/survey-measures-whites-blacks-views-on-american-identity-guns-political-violence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UIC press release</a>:
“We cannot ignore that a non-negligible minority of Americans believes that gun rights extend to the context of political protests, that people should have the authority to shoot at protesters based on their personal judgments of danger, and that a substantial number of gun owners would bring their firearms to a political event.”
She continued:
“The free exchange of political ideas, a citizen’s right to assemble and to petition government is inconsistent with the public carry of firearms. Weapons do not foster political exchange; they are designed to hamper it.”

<a href="https://hist.uic.edu/profiles/mccloskey-deirdre/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deirdre McCloskey</a> is a Distinguished Professor of History, Economics, English, and Communication at the University of Illinois Chicago. McCloskey is the author of 15 books and is a trans woman who says he has been “socially performing” as a woman for 27 years.
Professor McCloskey was scheduled to <a href="https://pittnews.com/article/180576/news/status-of-transgenderism-and-womanhood-debate-at-pitt-uncertain-after-participant-drops-out/#photo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debate the topic of “Transgenderism and Womanhood”</a> with Michael Knowles at an event hosted by the University of Pittsburgh’s College Republicans and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. Leading up to the event, a petition was circulated around campus calling for the event to be canceled. On March 11, in response to this, McCloskey tweeted:

A thousand people have signed a petition against Michael Knowles &#8216;debating&#8221; me on transgender matters on April 18 at Pittsburgh. They should be ashamed. True, Knowles is an anti-Jesus Catholic, a fascist advocating state power over ideas. But we live in a free country.

In an interview with <a href="https://pittnews.com/article/180187/news/deirdre-mccloskey-discusses-upcoming-debate-with-michael-knowles-criticizes-petition-to-cancel-event/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Pitt News</a>, McCloskey said:
“That people recommend it’s a good idea to stop open conversation in a university because someone says something they don’t agree with is counter to the purposes, the noble purposes, of the University of Pittsburgh. It’s a complete undermining of the ideals of Western civilization.” 
McCloskey also claimed:
“Opposing him speaking is exactly what he wants because then the cruel conservatives, which he’s a good example [of], can say, ‘Ah, you see, those leftists, they don’t believe in free speech.’ That’s the kind of people they are. So you can see how stupid it is to oppose this.” 
However, just a few weeks later, McCloskey <a href="https://freebeacon.com/latest-news/trans-professor-backs-out-of-debate-with-conservative-commentator-the-ideology-is-indefensible/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pulled out of the debate</a>. Michael Knowles announced the news on Twitter, saying:

<a href="https://hist.uic.edu/profiles/mccloskey-deirdre/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deirdre McCloskey</a> is a Distinguished Professor of History, Economics, English, and Communication at the University of Illinois Chicago. McCloskey is the author of 15 books and is a trans woman who says he has been “socially performing” as a woman for 27 years.

Professor McCloskey was scheduled to <a href="https://pittnews.com/article/180576/news/status-of-transgenderism-and-womanhood-debate-at-pitt-uncertain-after-participant-drops-out/#photo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debate the topic of “Transgenderism and Womanhood”</a> with Michael Knowles at an event hosted by the University of Pittsburgh’s College Republicans and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. Leading up to the event, a petition was circulated around campus calling for the event to be canceled. On March 11, in response to this, McCloskey tweeted:

According to her university profile, she “studies black historical excellence within educational communities with goals of reframing curriculum and instruction today.” She is the author of the book “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cultivating-Genius-Culturally-Historically-Responsive/dp/1338594893" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cultivating Genius</a>: An Equity Model for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy.”
Muhammad <a href="https://www.ace-ed.org/teaching-toward-genius-an-equity-model-for-pedagogy-in-action/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">created the “HILL” model of teaching</a> which “responds to students’ histories, identities, literacies and liberation.” Muhammad describes her education model as:
“The HILL model is an equity framework for teaching and learning across all disciplines. Honoring traditions and theories of culturally responsive learning, this model is historically responsive and grounded in Black education and Black excellence. Members of 19th century African American literary societies had four collective goals toward advancing their education.” 
Muhammad defines these four goals as: Identity, Skills, Intellectualism, and Criticality. For Identity, she writes:
“Because we are complex beings, we have racial, cultural, gender, environmental, and community identities, to name a few. Not only is it important to teach youths who they are, but educators should also teach students about the identities and cultures of others different from them.” 
The description for Criticality reads:
“Criticality is the capacity and ability to read, write, think, and speak in ways to understand power and equity in order to understand and promote anti-oppression. In Cultivating Genius, I define oppression simply as any wrongdoing, hurt, or harm, including racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, or any other oppression. Unlike lower case “c” critical, which is just deep and analytical thinking, Critical with a capital “c” is related to power, equity, and anti-oppression. As learning takes place, one asks, ‘How am I developing an understanding of power, equity, anti-racism and anti-oppression?’”

According to his university profile, Morton “works to transform STEM learning environments, creating spaces that are recognized and understood as extensions of students&#8217; identity rather than sites of oppression that perpetuate hostility and exclusion.”

<a href="https://glas.uic.edu/profiles/naber-nadine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nadine Naber</a> is a Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Global Asian Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her <a href="https://gws.uic.edu/profiles/naber-nadine/">profile</a> says:
“Dr. Naber’s research interests lie at the intersections of transnational feminisms; women of color and queer of color theory; de-colonizing feminisms; empire studies; critical race studies; and Middle East Studies; and Arab American Studies. Drawing upon these fields, Dr. Naber’s research theorizes the racialization of Arab and Muslim Americans within the contexts of empire and diaspora.”
In December 2023, Naber wrote a <a href="https://truthout.org/articles/when-abolitionists-say-free-them-all-we-mean-palestine-too/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TruthOut opinion editoria</a>l called “When Abolitionists Say ‘Free Them All,’ We Mean Palestine Too.” She compared Israel’s response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack to the police response during the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Ferguson#ref1204126" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ferguson riots in 2014</a>. 
In 2021, Naber <a href="https://www.jadaliyya.com/Details/43566" target="_blank" rel="noopener">participated in an interview</a> to discuss her article “The Radical Potential of Mothering during the Egyptian Revolution.” When asked why she wrote <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.15767/feministstudies.47.1.0062" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the publication</a>, Naber replied:

In the past, Naber participated in another <a href="https://youtu.be/4GX3m-8k8m4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">panel discussion</a> on the “feminism and liberation struggles” of Palestinian people who — according to the host, Professor Sabina Vaught — are victims of an “ongoing US-Israeli colonization, occupation, settlement, and genocide.” Naber also led a TEDx Talk titled “<a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/nadine_naber_arab_feminism_is_not_an_oxymoron" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arab Feminism is Not an Oxymoron</a>,” discussing the history of head coverings.
During the Talk, Naber remarked that Muslim women in the 1980s held different beliefs about covering their hair. She then declared, “[T]he ‘veil’ has taken on new meaning in the 21st century — at a time when people are increasingly turning to religion as a refuge across the globe, including in the United States.”
She continued, “Especially after September 11 [2001] — in response to increased anti-muslim racism and war — more and more Arab Muslim women are proudly claiming their faith, and their Muslim identity, by covering their hair.” 
According to the Middle East Research and Information Project:
“Many accounts have suggested that the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/intifada" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intifada</a> has enabled Palestinian women to make great strides toward their social as well as political liberation … it is also true that the intifada has been the context for a vicious campaign in Gaza to impose the hijab (headscarf) on all women. The campaign included the threat and use of violence and developed into a comprehensive social offensive.”

<a href="https://glas.uic.edu/profiles/naber-nadine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nadine Naber</a> is a Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Global Asian Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her <a href="https://gws.uic.edu/profiles/naber-nadine/">profile</a> says:
“Dr. Naber’s research interests lie at the intersections of transnational feminisms; women of color and queer of color theory; de-colonizing feminisms; empire studies; critical race studies; and Middle East Studies; and Arab American Studies. Drawing upon these fields, Dr. Naber’s research theorizes the racialization of Arab and Muslim Americans within the contexts of empire and diaspora.”
In December 2023, Naber wrote a <a href="https://truthout.org/articles/when-abolitionists-say-free-them-all-we-mean-palestine-too/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TruthOut opinion editoria</a>l called “When Abolitionists Say ‘Free Them All,’ We Mean Palestine Too.” She compared Israel’s response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack to the police response during the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Ferguson#ref1204126" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ferguson riots in 2014</a>. 

In 2021, Naber <a href="https://www.jadaliyya.com/Details/43566" target="_blank" rel="noopener">participated in an interview</a> to discuss her article “The Radical Potential of Mothering during the Egyptian Revolution.” When asked why she wrote <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.15767/feministstudies.47.1.0062" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the publication</a>, Naber replied:

While conducting research and interviews for the paper, Naber said her observations revealed the “exclusion” of mothers from social movements who lack childcare or want to participate in adult-only meetings. Naber’s <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.15767/feministstudies.47.1.0062" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> requires JSTOR credentials, but the following excerpt was included in her interview transcript:
“Asserting the radical potential of mothering allows us to recognize how heteropatriarchal concepts and traditional gender norms can be disrupted and how we might imagine an ever-expansive revolution that is not limited to the boundaries of a public square or to a singular notion of the revolutionary actor.”

“Indeed the practices of rape and sexual assaults that have been well documented during the founding of Israel, that continue today, are not an exception or a secondary impact of colonial violence.
