Mandated Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Training for Staff

Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. In certain cases, universities must abide by restrictions dictated by foreign parties to receive funding. In addition, there have been <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-universities-took-billions-in-unreported-foreign-funds-u-s-finds-11603226953">reports</a> that claim that universities underreport foreign funding. The University of Washington receives a “C+” grade for Protests and Canceling Speakers. Since 2021, the university has had two incidents. In April 2023, a transgender student <a href="https://twitter.com/TPUSA/status/1646269388579020800">attacked</a> a Turning Point USA representative while they were tabling on campus. The student approached the table and accused TPUSA of committing transgender genocide. He then flipped the table and attempted to strike another member at the table.
In the same month, several dozen leftists <a href="https://www.dailyuw.com/news/as-a-woman-i-can-t-believe-you-re-saying-this-to-a-group-of/article_f4b5f6f6-d994-11ed-a6f9-b798ebd89b2e.html?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=user-share">protested</a> as the TPUSA chapter hosted a pro-life activist Autumn Higashi.

Protests and Canceling Speakers

The University of Washington receives a “C” grade for Boycotting, Divesting, and Sanctioning Israel (BDS). According to the <a href="https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/campus-divestment-resolutions">Jewish Virtual Library</a>, since the start of the 2013-14 school year, the university’s student body has introduced one piece of legislation that would require the university to divest from any Israeli company and from companies that do business with Israel. The piece of legislation failed.
Although the piece of legislation failed, introducing this type of legislation often puts a target on Jewish and pro-Israel students and communities, fostering an environment vulnerable to antisemitism.

The University of Washington receives a “C” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. <a href="https://www.washington.edu/coronavirus/2023/05/08/changes-to-university-covid-19-policies/">The university</a> describes its rules on vaccinations: &#8220;With the increased level of community immunity and following updated Food and Drug Administration guidelines, the UW will discontinue its requirement that employees and students receive a COVID-19 vaccine. This follows guidance from public health officials and is in alignment with other Washington universities. Being up to date on COVID-19 vaccination remains very highly encouraged.&#8221;
The university describes its rules on masking: &#8220;The UW will align its face covering policy with local public health agencies&#8217; guidance. Masks will be optional outside of health-care settings, and we ask that your respect individuals&#8217; choices regarding mask wearing in these situations.&#8221;

According to the <a href="https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018">Federal Bureau of Investigation</a>, the Seattle, Washington violent crime rate was 680.17 per 100,000 people in 2018, higher than the 2018 national average of 380.56 per 100,000 people. While campus safety is of utmost importance, it is also pertinent to consider the crime rates of the surrounding town or city as students often tend to venture off campus, especially after their freshman year.

<a href="https://education.uw.edu/people/rjd">Robin DiAngelo</a> is an Affiliate Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington. She is best known for her New York Times bestselling book titled “<a href="https://www.robindiangelo.com/publications/">White Fragility</a>,” which examines DiAngelo’s belief that all white people have embraced and internalized bigotry in order to protect institutional racism in every aspect of American life.
Robin previously described her all-encompassing view on systemic racism in her article <a href="https://www.robindiangelo.com/publications/">“Nothing to Add,”</a> noting that systematic racism results in the unequal distribution of resources amongst racial groups, essentially defining racism as any and all racial disparities.
She writes, “&#8230;whiteness scholars define racism as encompassing economic, political, social, and cultural structures, actions, and beliefs that systematize and perpetuate an unequal distribution of privileges, resources, and power among white people and people of color.”
DiAngelo states that the unequal distribution of resources is what makes racism an inexorable part of the free market.
“Capitalism is so bound up with racism&#8230;Capitalism is dependent on inequality, on an underclass. If the model is profit over everything else, you’re not going to look at your policies to see what is most racially equitable.” 
During her appearance on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZfiSjTHVqA&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;ab_channel=TheTonightShowStarringJimmyFallon">Jimmy Fallon</a>, DiAngelo explained that individuals are not immune to racism, as it&#8217;s a foundational aspect of our nation. Racism is not an individual act or offense, but rather a system that disproportionately discriminates against people of color and automatically benefits whites. During an appearance on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dteOQPzc_so">CBS News</a>, she stated that white privilege is automatically bestowed upon white people whether they consider themselves racist or not. During a later interview with the <a href="https://youtu.be/neV_GlvUGn4?t=439">Family Action Network</a>, DiAneglo will go to her “last breath” believing that all white people are racist;
“I will hold to my last breath that all white people that live in a society whose foundation is white superiority internalize the message of white superiority…”
During an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ey4jgoxeU">appearance</a> at the Seattle Public Library, she went further, declaring that all white people have a “deeply internalized” sense of white supremacy.  According to DiAngelo, white people are born and bred into racism and “internalize” their bigotry. She uses this basis to define “white fragility” is the inability of white Americans to come to terms with their inherent racism and resultant defensive reaction to being accused of harboring racist beliefs. Through this, white Americans maintain a racist system that they benefit from.
DiAngelo uses the individual as an example of the presence of racism in American society. She explains that racism is structural rather than individual, thus attributing any disparities to individual acts, such as behavior or values, is emblematic of “white fragility” and how white Americans protect racist institutions from systematic change.

She also received criticism from Missouri Senator Josh Hawley when it was discovered that her work is <a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/senator-hawley-requests-smithsonian-explain-controversial-talking-about-race-initiative">featured prominently</a> in diversity trainings hosted by government institutions.

<a href="https://smea.uw.edu/faculty/cleo-woelfle-erskine-ph-d/">Cleo Wölfle Hazard</a>, P.h.D, is an Assistant Professor for the School of Marine &amp; Environmental Affairs and also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle. 
Wölfle Hazard’s university biography states, “As a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz, ze [sic] drew this field experience together with queer, transgender, and Indigenous theory to theorize how river sciences could work against the Manifest Destiny logics that shape settler environmental governance in the Western US.”
Wölfle Hazard’s book <a href="https://water-relations.net/underflows/">Underflows: Queer Trans Ecologies and River Justice</a> (2022), draws “on the idea of underflows—the parts of a river’s flow that can’t be seen, the underground currents that seep through soil or rise from aquifers through cracks in bedrock—Wölfle Hazard elucidates the underflows in river cultures, sciences, and politics where Native nations and marginalized communities fight to protect rivers.”

Wölfle Hazard’s book <a href="https://water-relations.net/underflows/">Underflows: Queer Trans Ecologies and River Justice</a> (2022), draws “on the idea of underflows—the parts of a river’s flow that can’t be seen, the underground currents that seep through soil or rise from aquifers through cracks in bedrock—Wölfle Hazard elucidates the underflows in river cultures, sciences, and politics where Native nations and marginalized communities fight to protect rivers.”

<a href="https://familymedicine.uw.edu/osher/osher-team/cora-breuner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Cora Breuner</a> is Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of  Washington. 
According to her Seattle Children’s Hospital profile, Breuner’s “research interests include the evaluation of yoga as an adjunctive intervention for eating disorders, biofeedback for chronic headache and the assessment of complementary medicine for diabetes.” One of her goals “is to incorporate complementary, holistic and integrative medicine into the outpatient and inpatient arenas at Children’s [Hospital].”
According to <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/professor-minors-dont-have-agency-to-get-tattoos-but-do-for-gender-affirming-procedures/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The College Fix</a>, Breuner “signed on to a 2018 <a href="https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/142/4/e20182162/37381/Ensuring-Comprehensive-Care-and-Support-for?autologincheck=redirected?nfToken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy statement</a> supporting ‘gender-affirming’ care for transgender/gender-diverse children.” The title of the policy is, “Ensuring Comprehensive Care and Support for Transgender and Gender-Diverse Children and Adolescents.” In the section for “Gender-Affirmative Care”, the policy lays out the following beliefs: 
— “transgender identities and diverse gender expressions do not constitute a mental disorder;”
— “variations in gender identity and expression are normal aspects of human diversity, and binary definitions of gender do not always reflect emerging gender identities;”
— “gender identity evolves as an interplay of biology, development, socialization, and culture; and…”
— “if a mental health issue exists, it most often stems from stigma and negative experiences rather than being intrinsic to the child.”
In an <a href="https://www.npr.org/transcripts/804508548?ft=nprml&amp;f=804508548" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview with NPR</a> titled “What your Teen Wishes You Knew about Sex Education”, Breuner said: 
“Sometimes, parents are actually, interestingly, very excited about this and are happy that their child is exploring other gender or another sexuality. So they actually want the kid to explore things faster than the kid wants to.”
Though Breuner favors “gender-affirmative care” for youth, she thinks that minors should not be legally allowed to get tattoos. The College Fix reports that Breuner thinks “it is time to reconsider various laws regarding tattoos and minors.” There are no federal laws regarding minor tattoos, but such laws are different from state to state. 
In a piece for the <a href="https://archive.ph/jrdrq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a> she explains that minors do not “have that kind of agency to make a decision.”

On June 6, Marhoefer published a <a href="https://theconversation.com/historians-are-learning-more-about-how-the-nazis-targeted-trans-people-205622" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece</a> for The Conversation titled “Historians are learning more about how the Nazis targeted trans people.” The main premise of the article is to assess the treatment of transgender people in Nazi Germany and how it differed in severity from how they were treated in the Weimar Republic. 
Marhoefer even related the Nazi treatment of transgender people to the current treatment of such people in the United States by condemning certain states that have prohibited “gender affirming health care”: 
“Today, right-wing attacks against trans people in the U.S. are intensifying. Though the <a href="https://www.aap.org/en/news-room/news-releases/aap/2018/aap-policy-statement-urges-support-and-care-of-transgender-and-gender-diverse-children-and-adolescents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Academy of Pediatrics</a> and every major medical association approves gender-affirming health care for trans kids, Republican politicians have <a href="https://www.hrc.org/resources/attacks-on-gender-affirming-care-by-state-map" target="_blank" rel="noopener">banned it in 19 states, with even more moving to prohibit it</a>..It’s a reminder that attacks on trans people are nothing new – and that many of them are straight out of the Nazi playbook.”
Marhoefer commends the way transgender people were treated under the Weimar Republic, before the Nazi regime came to power in Germany. According to Marhoefer, “Gender-affirming medicine is now over 100 years old – and it has roots in Weimar Germany:”
“The Weimar Republic, the more tolerant democratic government that existed before Hitler, recognized the rights of trans people, though in a begrudging, limited way. She proceeds to list other privileges that transgender people had under the Weimar Republic:

In Berlin, transgender people published several magazines and had a political club. The sexologist <a href="https://theconversation.com/the-early-20th-century-german-trans-rights-activist-who-transformed-the-worlds-view-of-gender-and-sexuality-106278" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Magnus Hirschfeld</a>, who ran Berlin’s <a href="https://magnus-hirschfeld.de/ausstellungen/institute/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Institute for Sexual Science</a>, advocated for the rights of transgender people.”

According to her university profile, Sahin is a “dance practitioner-scholar and ethnographer specializing in contemporary Egyptian raqs sharqi (“belly dance”) and other MENAT (Middle Eastern, North African, and Turkish) dance genres.”
In October 2023, Sahin participated in a rally at the University of Washington that was in support of Hamas terrorists. <a href="https://thepostmillennial.com/woke-dance-professor-attends-pro-hamas-protest-on-university-of-washington-campus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Post Millennial</a> reports Professor Sahin was identified by students—in fact, Turning Point USA chapter student leaders—as “wearing pro-Hamas gear with their signature keffiyeh as the crowd called for the genocide of Jews” while attending the rally.

The video taken by the TPUSA students at the University of Washington shows Sahin identifying herself as a professor and standing between a trans individual and pro-Israel supporters. The Israel supporters were trying to explain to the transgender individual that he would be welcomed in Israel, but would be killed in Gaza for his gender identity.
In the background of the video, “pro-Hamas demonstrators can be heard chanting ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,’” as the Post Millennial reports, “which is a call for the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Israel.”

<a href="https://dance.washington.edu/people/christine-sahin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Christine Sahin</a> is an Acting Assistant Professor at the Seattle-based University of Washington. According to her university profile, Sahin is a “dance practitioner-scholar and ethnographer specializing in contemporary Egyptian raqs sharqi (“belly dance”) and other MENAT (Middle Eastern, North African, and Turkish) dance genres.”

In October 2023, Sahin participated in a rally at the University of Washington that was in support of Hamas terrorists. <a href="https://thepostmillennial.com/woke-dance-professor-attends-pro-hamas-protest-on-university-of-washington-campus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Post Millennial</a> reports Professor Sahin was identified by students—in fact, Turning Point USA chapter student leaders—as “wearing pro-Hamas gear with their signature keffiyeh as the crowd called for the genocide of Jews” while attending the rally.

The video taken by the TPUSA students at the University of Washington shows Sahin identifying herself as a professor and standing between a trans individual and pro-Israel supporters. The Israel supporters were trying to explain to the transgender individual that he would be welcomed in Israel, but would be killed in Gaza for his gender identity.

In the background of the video, “pro-Hamas demonstrators can be heard chanting ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,’” as the Post Millennial reports, “which is a call for the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Israel.”

In 2011, Reddy published a <a href="https://www.dukeupress.edu/freedom-with-violence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">book</a> titled “Freedom with Violence: Race, Sexuality, and the US State.” The aim of the book is described as:
“[T]he nation-state’s claim to provide freedom from violence depends on its systematic deployment of violence against peoples perceived as nonnormative and irrational. Reddy argues that the modern liberal state is organized as a “counterviolence” to race even as, and precisely because, race persists as the condition of possibility for the modern subject.”
“Freedom with Violence” is a part of the Duke University Press series titled “<a href="https://www.dukeupress.edu/series/Perverse-Modernities-A-Series-Edited-by-Jack-Halberstam-and-Lisa-Lowe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Perverse Modernities</a>,” which is described in the following way:

Judd claims the “American way” is one and the same with white supremacy:

In June 2022, in the aftermath of the Roe v. Wade decision being overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, Judd expressed <a href="https://www.washington.edu/news/2022/06/24/folks-on-the-ground-have-been-activated-and-ready-uw-expert-on-reproductive-justice-and-the-u-s-supreme-court/">dissent</a> with the Court’s ruling and connected its consequences to “black reproductive lives.” 
Judd wrote,
“One of the kinds of dystopic, terrible things about this ruling and its relationship to that, is that in a country where Black women are far more likely to die during childbirth, to force folks toward childbirth also seems like a death plan. I don’t think of it as happenstance that that is the idea, because there is this sense that Black reproductive lives matter less, that this nation would somehow be better off if Black women stopped having children.”
Judd claims that the lessening of black women&#8217;s access to abortion entails the loss of certain welfare benefits from the government:
“Concurrent with stripping access to abortion is also the stripping of what folks on the right are calling entitlements – food stamps, even WIC, the nutrition program for women, infants and children.”
Concluding the article, Judd places the load of abortion access on the states:
“States where abortions are legal will have to carry the load. Abortion funds help those who need access to care, who need to be able to travel to get an abortion, who need a place to stay while they’re getting health care.”

<a href="https://gwss.washington.edu/people/bettina-judd">Bettina Judd</a> is an Associate Professor in the <a href="https://gwss.washington.edu/">Department of Gender, Women &amp; </a>Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington. According to her faculty profile, “Judd is an interdisciplinary writer, artist and performer whose research focus is on black women's creative production and our use of visual art, literature, and music to develop feminist thought.” 

Judd’s profile also states that her “current book manuscript argues that black women’s creative production is feminist knowledge production produced by registers of affect she calls ‘feelin.’” 

In response to the October 2023 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, Judd tweeted the following:

<a href="https://dental.washington.edu/people/douglass-jackson/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Douglass Jackson</a> is a Clinical Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the UW School of Dentistry. In 2005, he was named assistant dean of dentistry. Fifteen years later Jackson was <a href="https://dental.washington.edu/dr-douglass-jackson-to-lead-schools-heightened-diversity-efforts/">appointed </a>“Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), pending approval by the UW Board of Regents.”
In a statement following his appointment to the role, Jackson said:
“What motivates me every day to do this work is the realization that we live in a place where talent is equally distributed and opportunity is not…I’m thrilled to work in this new capacity alongside the many people at the school and university who recognize the societal cost we pay by not addressing this discrepancy, and how failing to address it limits our ability to be the best school we know we can be.”
In a virtual faculty town hall <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m58Z5ZWkS0o" target="_blank" rel="noopener">meeting</a> held in January of 2021 (provided to the Watchlist Team by a former student), Jackson commented on systemic “constructs” during his speaking time: 
“We have constructs of unquestioned power that are built into our systems and processes. These constructs justify who gets elevated or who gets downgraded; they help us decide who gets included or who gets excluded. These are constructs which we use to judge or categorize others but also how others categorize and judge ourselves.”
Jackson said the UW Dental school needs to grow in the area of EDI (i.e. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion). He questions what he claims are harmful constructs inherent in the UW Dental school community:
“We need to identify those constructs in our culture that are sustaining inequity, dismantle them, and in a mindful and inclusive way replace them with constructs that sustain equity along with the diverse groups that comprise who we are.”
The doctor also stated that he and some associates in the UW Dental School community were implementing various EDI initiatives. One of their initiatives, since enacted, is establishing an EDI Affinity group within the UW Dental School community. Jackson encouraged his fellow community members to be a part of this initiative. One part of this affinity group is an EDI book club. At the time of the town hall, Jackson said the club was reading <a href="https://www.professorwatchlist.org/professor/ibramxkendi">Ibram X. Kendi’s</a> book “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-to-Be-an-Antiracist-audiobook/dp/B07TT85KLQ/ref=sr_1_1?hvadid=616990763969&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvlocphy=9030089&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvqmt=e&amp;hvrand=6964597715175028901&amp;hvtargid=kwd-614485839288&amp;hydadcr=24634_13611738&amp;keywords=how+to+be+antiracist&amp;qid=1686077593&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How to Be an Anti-Racist</a>.” 
Jackson then proceeded to discuss various EDI priorities: “EDI need[s] to show up as mission-critical every single day,” he said. Jackson called for “Pre-doctoral admissions for greater increased representation of minoritized populations [and] making sure [the school’s] curriculum reflects the diversity of the world in which we live and addresses systemic inequities that impact oral health.” 
In a subsequent virtual faculty <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoxRVbp7MqE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">town hall</a> held in June of 2020, Jackson made the following claims about race:
“Race is nothing more than a social construct. It is not biologic.” According to Jackson, the EDI Affinity group uses Kendi’s definition of racism verbatim, obtained from “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-to-Be-an-Antiracist-audiobook/dp/B07TT85KLQ/ref=sr_1_1?hvadid=616990763969&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvlocphy=9030089&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvqmt=e&amp;hvrand=6964597715175028901&amp;hvtargid=kwd-614485839288&amp;hydadcr=24634_13611738&amp;keywords=how+to+be+antiracist&amp;qid=1686077593&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How to Be an Anti-Racist</a>.”
“Racism is a marriage of racist policies and racist ideas that produces and normalizes racial inequities.”
They also use Kendi’s definition of racial inequity: 
“Racial inequity is when two or more racial groups are not standing on approximately equal footing.”
Kendi, a <a href="https://www.bu.edu/antiracism-center/profile/ibram-x-kendi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Professor of Humanities</a> at Boston University, claims that racism is an integral part of American institutions and that white Americans benefit from such racism. He has also called for an <a href="https://www.politico.com/interactives/2019/how-to-fix-politics-in-america/inequality/pass-an-anti-racist-constitutional-amendment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-racist amendment</a> to the U.S. Constitution, which includes, but is not limited to, the following: 
“The [anti-racist] amendment would make unconstitutional racial inequity over a certain threshold, as well as racist ideas by public officials (with “racist ideas” and “public official” clearly defined). It would establish and permanently fund the Department of Anti-racism (DOA) comprised of formally trained experts on racism and no political appointees.”
Kendi also <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/09/28/bu-professor-suggests-amy-coney-barrett-is-a-white-colonizer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">denounced</a> Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s adoption of two Haitian children, and is opposed to interracial families.  
Jackson also addressed the school of dentistry’s goal of building anti-racism into its curriculum. He mentioned <a href="https://dental.washington.edu/people/natasha-m-flake/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Natasha Flake</a>, Professor of the Endodontics department, along with <a href="https://dental.washington.edu/people/kimberly-espinoza/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kimberly Espinoza</a> of the DECOD program as key figures in promoting the school of dentistry’s anti-racist curriculum, and its overall anti-racism agenda.
