According to <a href="https://www.vt.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/residency/eligibility-for-virginia-in-state-tuition-privileges.html#equity">the university</a>, &#8220;As of July 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia has adopted a provision for individuals who may not be eligible for domicile but live, work, and pay taxes to the Commonwealth (§23.1-506). Eligibility for in-state tuition; exception; certain out-of-state and high school students. Any student who:
<ul>
<li>Attended high school for at least two years in the Commonwealth and either</li>
</ul>
&#8211; graduated on or after July 1, 2008, from a public or private high school or program of home instruction in the Commonwealth or
&#8211; passed on or after July 1, 2008, a high school equivalency examination approved by the Secretary of Education;
<ul>
<li>Has submitted evidence that they or, in the case of a dependent student, at least one parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis has filed, unless exempted by state law, Virginia income tax returns for at least two years immediately prior to the date of registration or enrollment; and</li>
<li>Registers as an entering student or is enrolled in a public institution of higher education in the Commonwealth.</li>
</ul>
Students who meet these criteria shall be eligible for in-state tuition regardless of their citizenship or immigration status, except that students with currently valid visas issued under 8 U.S.C. §1101(a)(15)(F), §1101(a)(15)(H)(iii), §1101(a)(15)(J) (including only students or trainees), or §1101(a)(15)(M) are not eligible.&#8221;

Oftentimes, foreign parties will convey their influence by funding certain courses, activities, professors, and organizations on campus. Virginia Tech University receives a “C” grade for Mask and Vaccine Mandates. <a href="https://vtx.vt.edu/articles/2022/01/president-message-013122.html">The university</a> describes its rules on vaccinations in an article titled &#8220;From President Tim Sands: Changes in vaccine mandate, plans for successful semester:&#8221; Last week, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares issued a legal opinion concerning vaccine requirements that reverses the preceding attorney general&#8217;s opinion upon which our vaccine policy was based. Consequently, Virginia Tech will no longer require students to be vaccinated as a condition of enrollment or in-person instruction, effective immediately.&#8221; Additionally, &#8220;We continue to encourage everyone in our community to be vaccinated, get a booster dose as soon as you&#8217;re eligible, and report any updates to your vaccination status to the university.&#8221;
<a href="https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/newsroom/campus-news/COVID-19-guidelines.html">The university</a> describes its rules for masking in a May 31, 2022 update on its COVID-19 Masking and Testing Guidelines page: &#8220;The number of positive COVID-19 cases in our region and on our health sciences and technology campus is continuing to increase. Thus, while we are not allowed to mandate masking, it is strongly suggested that people wear masks whenever possible while in public spaces or group settings indoors.&#8221;
While vaccinations and masks are not mandated by the university, they are strongly encouraged.

In a section of the syllabus titled, “Who I Am,” Mrs. Duncan Lane describes herself as a, “Caucasian, cisgender female,” who is “married to a cisgender male.” She further laments the “injustice” of arbitrarily receiving various “privileges” throughout her life.
“I am a Caucasian cisgender female and first-generation college student from Appalachia who is of Scottish, British, and Norwegian descent. I am married to a cisgender male, and we are middle class. While I did not “ask” for the many privileges in my life: I have benefited from them, and will continue to benefit from them, whether I like it or not. This is injustice.”

Matthew Gabriele is a <a href="https://liberalarts.vt.edu/departments-and-schools/department-of-religion-and-culture/faculty/matthew-gabriele.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Professor of Medieval Studies </a>and Chair of the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, including Apocalyptic Theories, Religion and Violence, and Game of Thrones: The Medieval and the Modern. He has also penned many publications for outlets such as CNN, the Washington Post, TIME, and Teen Vogue. He often writes about history and how conservatives alter historical events to make themselves sound better.
<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/05/03/historical-analogies-covid-fascism-mccarthyism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In an article for the Washington Post</a>, Dr. Gabriele accuses conservatives of making “bad analogies” in order to combat anyone asking them to “reflect on their words or actions.” As an example, he alleges that the political-right compares mask mandates and Covid-19 vaccination cards to the yellow stars the Nazis forced the Jewish to wear during the Holocaust in order to pretend to be a “new persecuted minority.”
Dr. Gabriele does, however, support the analogy that detention facilities for illegal immigrants at the border under conservative leadership are the same as concentration camps during the holocaust.

During the Holocaust, Nazis illegally forced legal citizens of a specific religion, political affiliation, or ethnicity into <a href="https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/concentration-camps-1933-39" target="_blank" rel="noopener">concentration camps,</a> where many were ultimately executed. <a href="https://www.ice.gov/detain/detention-management" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Immigration detention facilities</a> in the United States at the southern border were installed in order to keep those entering the country illegally in one place until they speak with an immigration judge to determine if they can stay in the U.S. or if they will be sent back home.
Dr. Gabriel often takes to Twitter to voice his strong disdain for conservatives and the police. He calls conservatives “bigots” and “sh*tbags” and also compares police precincts to gangs. Some examples are below:
