<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/washington-u-lecturer-warns-medical-students-not-debate-systemic-oppression-shut-down" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> reports that Reedy-Rogier was caught on camera warning students that if they try to debate her on critical race theory and “systemic oppression,” she “will shut that s— down real fast.” During a lecture, she said: 
“I have a really hard time being neutral around issues of systemic oppression. So oftentimes you will know how I feel. This does not mean that I am opposed to hearing other perspectives, I would like to be very clear about that: I am always willing to engage in dialogue with folks that may disagree with me. Always.” 
She continues: 
“And I will not think less of you, nor will I try to fight you or debate you. And in fact, if you try to fight me or debate me, I will shut that s— down real fast.” 
Reedy-Rogier also has argued the field of medicine “<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11551901/Washington-Uni-St-Louis-lecturer-says-race-implications-practice-medicine.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has a really bad racism issue</a>,” stating: 
“We are very firm in race being a social construct, and that that has implications for how we practice medicine. That has implications for how we understand research, and that has implications for how we understand health disparity. And so when we are asking you all to engage in this, we’re really asking you to think about your own identities, and what that means to be anti-racist, which is an active stance in medicine that we know has a really bad racism issue.” 
Reedy-Rogier’s lecture is part of the <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/lecturer-cautions-students-not-to-challenge-her-on-systemic-oppression/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">medical school’s “Health Equity &amp; Justice” lessons</a> within the “Gateway Curriculum” that was rolled out in 2020. According to her university profile, Dr. Garwood “provides care for complex adolescent patients.” She also designed and serves as co-director of the Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
The Transgender Center <a href="https://www.stlouischildrens.org/conditions-treatments/transgender-center#:~:text=The%20Washington%20University%20Transgender%20Center,that%20addresses%20your%20specific%20needs." target="_blank" rel="noopener">provides a range of services</a> including puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and menstrual suppression. The center’s website states: “Gender affirming care isn’t meant to influence people in any particular direction. We don’t ‘treat’ anyone’s identity or tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do.”
The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11754435/Emails-doctors-St-Louis-transgender-clinic-telling-teachers-affirm-fifth-graders.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington University Transgender Center is being investigated</a> by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the office of Senator Josh Hawley after a former employee <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">authored an article “blowing the whistle”</a> on the “morally and medically appalling” actions happening at the center.
The whistleblower, who previously worked at the center for four years, <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detailed the center’s aggressive and early intervention</a> and its “lack of regard for the rights of parents.”
<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/sites/default/files/2023-02/2023-02-09-Senator-Hawley-Letter-to-WashU.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In a letter</a> to the university chancellor, hospital president, and the center’s co-directors, Senator Josh Hawley writes:
“That report presented substantial evidence that, like so many other pediatric gender clinics across the United States, this Missouri-based clinic appears to have been operating without transparency, oversight, and accountability &#8211; and causing devastating harm to children in the process.” 
Dr. Garwood has also been in the news after emails were discovered by <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/emails-reveal-school-district-sought-out-advice-from-st-louis-childrens-hospital-transgender-center-regarding-multiple-fifth-graders-transitioning-at-the-same-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Parents Defending Education (PDE)</a> that show her encouraging the Parkway School District not to disclose students’ chest-binding practices to parents. When school officials asked for <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/childrens-hospital-advised-school-district-not-require-disclosure-students-chest-binding-parents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advice on how to handle chest-binding</a>, a staff member from the Transgender Center responded by quoting Dr. Garwood, saying:
“I would actually decline any requirements for disclosure by students or from school to parents.” 
Similarly, when asked for advice on how to handle fifth graders who are suffering from gender dysphoria, Dr. Garwood responded:
“The best we can do is affirm, validate and allow for the exploration, if in a few weeks or months, a student wants to go by their legal name and pronouns that match their sex assigned at birth, no harm was really done in affirming them before.” 
As of publication, Dr. Garwood is still employed by the university.

The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11754435/Emails-doctors-St-Louis-transgender-clinic-telling-teachers-affirm-fifth-graders.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington University Transgender Center is being investigated</a> by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the office of Senator Josh Hawley after a former employee <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">authored an article “blowing the whistle”</a> on the “morally and medically appalling” actions happening at the center.

The whistleblower, who previously worked at the center for four years, <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detailed the center’s aggressive and early intervention</a> and its “lack of regard for the rights of parents.”

<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/sites/default/files/2023-02/2023-02-09-Senator-Hawley-Letter-to-WashU.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In a letter</a> to the university chancellor, hospital president, and the center’s co-directors, Senator Josh Hawley writes:
“That report presented substantial evidence that, like so many other pediatric gender clinics across the United States, this Missouri-based clinic appears to have been operating without transparency, oversight, and accountability - and causing devastating harm to children in the process.” 
Dr. Garwood has also been in the news after emails were discovered by <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/emails-reveal-school-district-sought-out-advice-from-st-louis-childrens-hospital-transgender-center-regarding-multiple-fifth-graders-transitioning-at-the-same-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Parents Defending Education (PDE)</a> that show her encouraging the Parkway School District not to disclose students’ chest-binding practices to parents. When school officials asked for <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/childrens-hospital-advised-school-district-not-require-disclosure-students-chest-binding-parents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advice on how to handle chest-binding</a>, a staff member from the Transgender Center responded by quoting Dr. Garwood, saying:
“I would actually decline any requirements for disclosure by students or from school to parents.” 
Similarly, when asked for advice on how to handle fifth graders who are suffering from gender dysphoria, Dr. Garwood responded:
“The best we can do is affirm, validate and allow for the exploration, if in a few weeks or months, a student wants to go by their legal name and pronouns that match their sex assigned at birth, no harm was really done in affirming them before.” 
As of publication, Dr. Garwood is still employed by the university.

Gustafson describes himself as a “political anthropologist with an interest in climate politics, fossil fuels, and the energy transition.”
In November 2023, Gustafson came under fire for <a href="https://www.kmov.com/2023/11/28/washington-university-professor-under-fire-anti-israel-bias-after-social-media-post/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">antisemitic social media comments</a>. After protesters in Los Angeles threw smoke devices and vandalized the home of the president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Gustafson <a href="https://twitter.com/libsoftiktok/status/1729509403676598707" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allegedly posted</a> the following:

In 2021, after a student destroyed a flag display that was part of a 9/11: Never Forget Project, Gustafson <a href="https://yaf.org/news/nearly-50-washu-professors-sign-statement-defending-9-11-vandal-american-flag-is-symbol-of-american-imperialism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed a statement</a> in support of the vandal, calling the crime a “protest.” <a href="https://www.studlife.com/forum/2021/09/14/community-statement-against-islamophobia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The letter</a> further said the American flag is “the symbol of American imperialism and violence in the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and beyond.”
Gustafson is also a proponent of fossil fuel divestment. In March 2023, he participated in a <a href="https://www.studlife.com/uncategorized/2023/03/01/green-action-rally-demands-university-divestment-from-fossil-fuels" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Green Action rally</a> that called on the university to divest from fossil fuels and “recognize the impacts of environmental racism.” He said the university “directly contributes to violence against all of us” because “everybody breathes the toxic impacts of burning coal to produce electricity.” He stated:
“It’s really quite embarrassing to be a faculty member at WashU. It should be [embarrassing] for students and alumni to be associated with a University that’s really far behind a lot of things.” 
He added:
“When Chancellor Martin says they can’t do anything because they’re just trying to protect the money for the University, there are plenty of other places you can invest your money in this daily sick capitalist system that we live in.”
